We would gather early evening for a meal and visit with family members. As the clock ticked away the excitement grew for the evening delight of fireworks. My parents had bought a house on the skyline in Duluth Minnesota. It overlooked Lake Superior harbor. They had a beautiful view watching the big ships and sailboats on the lake and coming through the harbor. The ariel bridge would go up for the ships to pass through. I know live on Park point and cross that bridge at least twice a day. I still get excited at seeing the big ships and the sail boats.

As the sky darkened we grew even more excited since soon the city would begin to set off the fireworks over the harbor. Lots of yahs, oohs and wows were said. I have wonder memories with my family who now have passed on. Parents , uncle and aunts and a cousin. My children are grown and their children are grown. My husband has now passed on the glory of the universe.

I still get excited at seeing the fireworks but the fourth of July means so much more to me. Tonight I will gather down by the bay with residents in my apartment building to watch the fireworks. I am making friends and will not be alone. My view from the bay will be better than the view at my parents home but will be bittersweet because I am not with my family,

Little did I know all those years ago that the fourth means so much more to me than the fireworks and a meal. Since starting my family research I have enjoyed tracing our history back the revolution and further. I have now become a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and have four direct ancestors plus uncles or sons who fought along side of my grandfathers.

My main patriot is James Woodmansee born August 1732 New Jersey to Thomas Woodmansee and Mary Ware daughter of Thomas Ware. He married the 5th of October 1758 to Hannah Worden in New Jersey. They had nine children.

James resided at Cedar Creek , Monmouth, New Jersey. He assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of Lieutenant for the state of New Jersey. He served under Captain John Stout, 2nd Reg, Monmouth Co Militia. I am .busy reading about that time and the 2nd New Jersey Regiment.

After the war James and his wife moved to Liberty Township, Butler County , Ohio. He died the 29th of January 1818 and wife hannah passed away 18th of April 1824. They are buried in their Butler County farm cemetery

My other three patriots are Joseph Cheuvront paid Supply tax 1783 Virginia, Moses Ellsworth Furnished supplies Rockingham Co Virginia and Ebenezer Coleman who has just now been approved. I am waiting on his certificates.

I know I have more patriots to find and prove. Have a wonderful fourth of July and say a thank you to our past and present patriots.

Life Goes Onhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03777055726019503326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9141529609042489092.post-15498570805338361952020-02-09T07:46:00.000-08:002020-02-09T07:59:39.969-08:00Genealogy Happy Dance Lets Celebrate Obituary for my Flaviouse Armenious Milsap/ Millsap

Soon after the happily married couple left Nebraska to live in Chicago for four years. This was during the period of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and Arthur was a carpenter and probably worked on the building of the fair. Mabel and Arthur then returned to Nebraska settling on a farm in Geneva. Arthur and Mabel had three daughters Alta Louise born 26 June 1892 in Evansville Wisconsin , May Belle 25 July 1895 in Chicago, Illinois and Pearl 11 April 1901 in Geneva, Nebraska. The family continue to make Nebraska their home until Arthur passed away 19 September 1919. Mabel remained in Nebraska for awhile. The 1920 census has her living with her parents in Taylor Loop Nebraska. Mabel's father John Henry passes away 20 September 1922. Sometime around 1930 Mabel moves to Custer South Dakota to be near two of her daughters. This is where she is found in the 1930 census. Mabel's mother Alta passes away 28 September 1937, sister Myrtle Alta on 11 December 1939 and her daughter Alta on 21 February 1944. Mabel lives to be 73 years old and dies 14 March 1946. There is a bit of confusion to where Mabel died. My aunt Alice the genealogist wrote that she died in Arkansas and Ancestry has a death certificate for Mabel J Hall dying in South Dakota the same date. Either Aunt Alice miss wrote the place of death or the death certificate was for a different Mabel. This is one mystery to further search. I know little about Mabel other than the details from census and other family notes with birth dates and death dates. I wish I had some letters or stories about her. Will continue to do my searches and hopefully will find something someday.
This is week 6 and this is my first post of the year. I may go back and pick up some of the past weeks prompts. Time will tell. This weeks prompt is same name and it fits perfect with my name Grace Alta. I am so proud of both of my names since my maternal grandma was Grace and my paternal grandma was Alta.

I was not lucky enough to know my grandma Alta physically but feel her presence near me at times. I sometimes think she is whispering in my ear. I adored my grandma Grace and have fond memories of her.
Grace Celeste Daly Esler was born the 6th of July 1892 to Catherine Ellen Gallaher and Andrew Daly. They never married. My great grandma Catherine was shunned by her parents for having a child out of wedlock. Catherine married Appleton Esler and they had a long and happy marriage. He raised grandma Grace as his. Appleton had been married before and had two children Tillie and Russell. Together Appleton and Catherine had two children Merle and Wayne. They were a happy blended family and I was lucky to know all of my great aunts and uncles. Grandma passed away August 18, 1972.
Alta comes from my paternal grandma. She was born the 26th of June 1892 to Arthur Hall and Mabel Coleman Hall. Alta passed away from cancer the 21st of February 1844.

Alta was named after her grandma Alta Angeline Cheuvront 1848 -1937.
A very pretty wedding took place on Wednesday, June 11th at high noon, at the home of Mr and Mrs A R Hall, when their daughter Alta L became the bride of Perry J Zion, the Rev A W Johnson officiating. The bride wore a beautiful dress of white voile and carried white roses.
A beautiful dinner followed the ceremony for which covers were laid for fifty. The young people are well and favorably known and were the recipients of many beautiful and useful presents: Lamp, Mr and Mrs J H Coleman, grandparents of the bride, cupboard, Mr and Mrs A R Hall parents of the bride, rug, Mr and Mrs E L Coleman, pair of vases Alta and Mae Oberkotter; carving set and spoons, Agnes, Florence and George Hall; knives and forks, Mr and Mrs J G Wirsig; water set Mr and Mrs F E Mills; berry set, Harry and Bessie Oberkotter; clock Mr and Mrs A J Roath; salt and pepper shakers, Bertha and Irma Wirsig; motto Rev and Mrs A W Johnson; set salt and pepper and toothpick holder, Verma and Floyd Coleman, towels, Mr and Mrs Exley; condiment set Pearl Hall,; table cloth, Mr and Mrs Oberkotter; sewing machine, Belle Hall; doily, Erancis Mills; tablecloth, Mr and Mrs Elmer Coleman; hand painting, E E W; cream ladle, Mr and Mrs W B wright; Motto, Gertrude Zion; $5,00, Mark Hall; set napkins Mr and Mrs B B Holmes.
The wedding took place in Taylor, Loup, Nebraska. 1910 had Adam and Rachel living in Sargent Custer, Nebraska so not sure if they missed the wedding or gift not mentioned. Map quest has the distance about 9 miles.
Christmas really felt like Christmas then.
My parents , brother , uncle and aunts were still with us. We would gather at my mother's home for dinner and gifts.
Christmas is still great but I miss my parents and now my brother David especially so never the same.
During the 1990s my mother started to give gifts for Christmas that were memories or treasures rather than a gift bought or cash. I always treasured these gifts and waited with excitement to see what I would receive this year.

This is a letter from December 1992 , just seeing her writing is a gift. Mom left us February 1998 and dad September 2008.

Here is my letter and gift that year

Dec 1992

Merry Christmas

I don't know what they all are

but they were popular in the early

1900s ( perhaps in the 1800s

They use to hang them on the wall

as you can see its a momento

from the World's Fair (in Chicago)

1893. Be careful when you

handle it the material is like

fiberglass It'll stick into your

skin like splinters and boy hard

to get out. I've gotten some

under a fingernail

This was from among

some things we got from

Art's grandma estate Her

name was Mabel Hall ( Coleman)

Evidently they attended the fair

That would be a after Arts

Mom ( Alta ) was born (1892) so Mabel would

be in her 20s. Art says he thinks his grandfather Arthur

Hall was a carpenter and built

part of the building for the fair.

This gift was the start of my collection from that fair. I have a ruby red souvenir glass I paid way to much for , tickets to the fair, souvenir books and glass slides.

Interesting note is when she gave me this family treasure it was 99 years old. Now it is 126 years old and has passed from my great grandmother Mabel Coleman Hall to my father Arthur R Zion to me.

All wonderful pieces of history that I treasure.

Soon I will have to gather all my 1893 Chicago World Fair treasures to pass on to the safety of other family members to protect.
Think of all the stories all the love that ended in our life.

It is fairly easy to get information on most of our 5th great grandparents to know who they are and how they lived.

I do have a problem with one line but maybe with more research and time I could figure out something on that line.

This year I hope to go deeper into each of these generations
Mary was born to John Lovejoy ( 1749 - 1835) and Mary Galup or Gallup Smith (1752-1834)

What a time in our history to be born.

Mary's tombstone states Mrs Mary Lovejoy. We know of know marriage at this time and if she did marry it would have to be a Lovejoy.

This next few weeks I will be working on the Woodmansee family line and researching the area my ancestor lived and fought in New Jersey Monmouth County.

Tonight I found a great timeline of the Revolutionary War era in Monmouth County. This will help me get to know a little more hopefully about my ancestor. From the application to SAR by Leon William Chumley I learnt that James was a Lieutenant in the Monmouth County New Jersey Militia under Capt John Stouts Company, Col David Brearley's Second Regiment.

I will continue to prove other patriots in the next year.

James Woodmansee was born the 15th of August 1732 Cedar Creek, Monmouth County, New Jersey to Thomas Woodmansee and Mary Ware.
He married Hannah Worden daughter of Samuel Worden 111 and Abigail Mott.
Further research will tell me if there were 8 or 9 children.

James passed away 29th of January 1818 in Hamilton , Butler , Ohio where he and his wife were living with son Daniel.

Today the 24th of July, my 3rd great uncle David Chauncey Christman Carpenter was born 188 years ago , the year was 1831.
David is the son of Daniel Christman and my great great grandmother Harriet Carpenter.
Daniel and Harriet also had a daughter Monica who would travel with her mother to Minnesota at a later date along with other family members.
Daniel Christman passed away in 1837 and some time after that Harriet's father, Harmon Carpenter adopted Daniel, changed his name to Carpenter and raised as his son.

David married a woman named Lovina, last name unknown at this moment. Three children were born to them.
David passed away in New York on the 5th of September 1899 at the age of 68 years old.

His mother Harriet married two more times and had seven children with Levi Anderson. Levi would pass away in New York in 1858.

Harriet would travel to Minnesota with her living children , marry again and die at the age of 94 years old out living three husbands and three of her children.

So I will say happy birthday to my uncle David Chauncey Christman Carpenter and continue to learn more about your life.

While wandering ancestry today I was searching hints of the siblings of my great grandmother Mabel Coleman Hall. I found a picture linked to her sister Myrtle Alta Coleman Oberkotter.

The contributor had it linked to Myrtle and stated back said Aunt Alta age 82.

The dress led me to the 1930s and since both women lived to late 1930s the dress fit. Except for the fact that Myrtle was born 1876 and died 1939 at the age of 63 years old while her mother Alta Cheuvront Coleman was born 1848 and lived to 1937 age of 89.

Mystery solved this wonderful photo is my great great grandmother Alta rather than my 2nd great aunt.

I love having this photo of grandma Alta at 82 years old.

I found The Historical and Biographical history of Iowa.

I am going to transcribe what I have found at this time on Alexander plus tidbits of others in the family.

ALEXANDER BURRELL HANNER an able and zealous member of the clergy of the Christian Church, and one of the local Elders of the church at Stuart, was born a son of JOHN and REBECCA (BURRELL) HANNER, natives of Gallia county, Ohio. The resided in Jackson county, Indiana, until 1838, when they started for what was then known as the Black Hawk Purchase in Iowa, but when they had reached a point near Bloomington, Indiana, the father was stricken with a fever which resulted in his death. The family then returned to Jackson county, Indiana, remaining there until 1848 when they came to Iowa, locating first in Lee county, where a brother in law of our subject had purchased land. In the fall of the following year they removed to Decatur county, where the death of the cherished mother occurred in the year of 1853.

JOHN and REBECCA HANNER became the parents of five sons and one daughter of who we offer brief record as follows: Rachel, who died in Decatur, Iowa, in 1890, was the wife of JAMES W WOODMANSEE; Bartholomew, a shoemaker by trade, died in Lawrence county, Indiana, Frank; who served three years as a soldier in the Seventh Iowa Calvary, is now engaged in farming in Jackson county, Indiana; John; who died in that county; Reuben; a retired farmer of Harland, Shelby county, Iowa; and Alexander B, the immediate subject of this review.

ALEXANDER B HANNER, the youngest child passed his early life on a farm, attending the common school of Indiana and Iow. In the year 1864, he removed from Decatur county to Muscatine county, Iowa, where he followed agricultural pursuits, and while there he also initiated his ministerial labors He had been a member of the Christian Church for some years, and in 1866 was granted a license to preach. His first pastoral charge was over the church of Moscow, Muscatine county; he next preached to several small congregations in Cedar county, this incumbency extending over a period of two years; he later had charge in turn of churches at Glenwood, Iowa county, and Luzerne, Benton county; for two years presided over two churches in Poweshiek county, and later was installed over two churches in Tama county, during which pastorate he maintained his residence on a farm. Mr Hanna also preached for four years at Clemons Grove, Marshall county, and after residing on his farm seven years he removed to Dallas county, where he had charge of two churches and resided near Redfield. From that place he came to Stuart, where he has since maintained his abode and where he has charge of the church for three years. In the year 1890 he organized a church in Harrison county, preaching for the same one year; his next pastorate was with two congregations in Marion county at Pleasant Ridge and Dallas.
On the 15th of August, 1852, was solemnized the marriage of Mr Hanna and Juda Young, who was born in Jackson county, Indiana, on the 20th of March, 1835. They became the parents of eleven children, concerning who we enter brief record as follow; Juda is the wife of Thomas Craft, of Belle Plaine Iowa; Rebecca died in childbirth; John W is a farmer of Decatur county, this State; Rachel, deceased, was the wife of Lorenzo D Skyles, Alexander B is a farmer of Dexter, Iowa; Sarah Elizabeth is the wife of Henry Wonderly of Des Moines; Mary E is the wife of James L Armstrong, who resides near Redfield, Iowa; Bartholomew is an employe of the Chicago & Rock Island Railroad; Francis Luke is in the employ of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Railroad; William who retained a clerical position in a general store for the period of five years, is now a commercial traveler and Rosa Bertha died in early life.
In his younger years Mr Hanna was an adherent of the Democratic party, but at the time of the Civil War he became an independent voter. In the Centennial year 1876, he identified himself with the Prohibition party, having been one o the first to expose its cause and interests, and having ever since been a stalwart advocate of its principles and policies. He has been called upon to serve in offices of public trust and responsibility, having served as Township Clerk, Assessor and Justice of Peace. He has delivered many able and ernest speeches in support of the prohibition cause, and for four years has been and is at the present writing (1895), chairman for the Ninth Congressional District, of the Prohibition State Central Committee. In his fraternal relations our honored subject is a Royal Arch Mason, being Chaplain of the blue lodge and chapter,, and is also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He is a forceful and entertaining speaker and able writer, annd is a frequent contributor to prohibition and church papers.
A costly war that lasted from 1775 to 1783, it secured American independence and gave revolutionary reforms of government and society the chance to continue. At its core, the war pitted colonists who wanted independence and the creation of a republic against the power of the British crown, which wanted to keep its empire whole. At certain times and in certain places, Americans fought other Americans in what became a civil war. From the family whose farm was raided, through the merchant who could not trade, to the slave who entered British lines on the promise of freedom, everyone had a stake in the outcome. https://www.legendsofamerica.com/ah-revolutioncapsulehistory/

James Woodmansee Revolutionary War soldier was born the 15th or 26th of August 1732 to Thomas Woodmansee and his wife Mary Ware, daughter of Thomas Ware.

He married on the 5th of Oct 1758 in Monmouth County, Hannah Worden born the 18 Jan 1738 in New Jersey, daughter of Samuel Worden the 3rd and and his wife Abigail Mott, and sister of Penelope and Silence Worden, who were married to James' brothers David and Gabriel. The three brothers and their families owned land and homes in Cedar Creek area in what is now Ocean County, New Jersey, and it is there where that James and Hannah's children were born.

Their children were James, b 31 Dec 1759, Asa b 5th Oct 1761, Phebe b 22 Feb 1764, James b 8th Aug 1766, Samuel b 4 Feb 1769, Job b 11 May 1771, Joseph b 2 Dec 1773 , Thomas b 13 Apr 1775, Daniel b 22 Sept 1777

David, Gabriel and James Woodmansee served in various offices in Dover Township following the Revolutionary Ware, which they also served. James was commissioned Lieutenant, serving in the Second Regiment, Monmouth County, New Jersey Militia.

James and Hannah sold their New Jersey properties in 1789, and the family then made their home in Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Twenty years later in 1809 James and Hannah sold the Union Township land and accompanied their son David and his family to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, traveling via flatboat down the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers. When they reached Cincinnati they were able to exchange hollow ware ( cast iron kettle, cooking utensils, etc) previously purchased, for necessities then needed in building a home in Liberty Township, Butler County, Ohio.
Within a few years their sons James, Samuel and Thomas came with their families to Ohio, as did their daughter Hannah, with her husband James Gray and their children. The Grays settled in Preble County, James Jr in Clermont County, Samuel in Darke County, and Thomas in Clinton County, Ohio.

James Woodmansee died 29th January 1818 at Liberty Township, Butler County Ohio home. Hanah died 16 April 1824. They are buried in their Butler County farm cemetery that saw at least thirty burials of family and neighbors during the ensuing years.

This is the beginning of my Woodmansee family story.

Life Goes Onhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03777055726019503326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9141529609042489092.post-25856015738647662072019-06-27T11:11:00.001-07:002019-06-27T11:11:33.280-07:00Treasure Chest Thursday Will of Thomas Woodmansee 1670 - 1733Treasure Chest Thursday ... The Will of Thomas Woodmansee Sr 1670 - 1733

Thomas Woodmansee Sr is my 7th great grandfather on my father side of the family.
He was born 17th of September 1670 in New London , Connecticut and passed away the 22nd of September 1733 in Shrewsbury , Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Thomas married Mary Ware and together they had at least 10 children according to his will.

I found his will on ancestry at New Jersey Abstract of Wills .

His will states Thomas of Shrewsbury, Monmouth co, yeoman, will of . Plantation where testator lives to be sold also interest in land in or near New London in New England Wife Mary children Thomas, John, David, Gabriel, James , Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah and Margaret. Son in law Ephraim Potter, and daughter Leadea. Daughters Abigail and Ann. Executors John Littel and George Williams of Shrewsbury and testator's wife Mary. Witness Richard Higgins , John Woodmansee , David Woodmansee Piep Doan (?) John Parker. Proved June 18 1737 Lib C p170 1737 Nov 26 Inventory made by Matthlas Venbrockel Jr and John Williams Witness Richard Compton.

It appears that Thomas was married to a Hannah Williams who died in 1699 before any of the children above were born. Unknown if they had any children at this time. More studying of this needs to be done.
I have decided to start with biographies of my ancestors starting with my great grandparents using the ahnentafel order.

By doing this it should help me get to know each of my ancestors better. I will be adding the

information to my Rootsmagic 7 which I recently purchased and work at adding content there and getting to understand the program. This also will be a great way to eventually share this information with my family members. I have images of many of my sources but have not included due to length of post. I have or will share some of these in other weekly theme posts.
