Mabel Jane Coleman (1872 - 1946) is #11 on my ahnentafel, my great grandmother who married

#10 Arthur Hall (1863 - 1919) on 28th of August 1891 in Colorado.

I am descended through their daughter # 5 Alta Louisa Hall (1892 - 1944) who married # 4 Perry G Zion

 ( 1886 - 1958) in Taylor Loup, Nebraska.

Mabel was born to John Henry Coleman and Alta Angeline Cheuvront.  1st of July 1872 in Greenwood
Nebraska. Mabel was the second of five children

Child 1 Elic Lemuel Coleman (1868-1944)
Child 2 Mabel Jane Coleman (1872 - 1946)
Child 3 Elmer Coleman ( 1875 - 1947)
Child 4 Myrtle Alta Coleman (1876-1939)
Child 5 Mary (1880- 1964)

The Coleman family lived in Greenwood, Cass County Nebraska.
The first school was a mile or south of town. In 1878 a school with a " seating capacity of 100" was built. The first class to graduate was in 1890, and a new schoolhouse was built in 1907.
In 1880 Greenwood had three elevators.
Mabel lost her paternal grandfather Elic Chalker Coleman 01 September 1873 at the age of 1 and her paternal grandmother Catherine Beiler Coleman 01 December 1884 in Greenwood Nebraska when she was 12 years old.
During her early years the president was Ulysses S Grant ( 1869 - 1877 ) Rutherford B Hayes who served 1877 - 1887 ).
Mabel continued to live in Nebraska with her family until she met and married Arthur R Hall in Denver Colorado 28 August 1891. Soon after the happily married couple left Nebraska to live in Chicago for four years. This was during the period of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and Arthur was a carpenter and probably worked on the building of the fair. Mabel and Arthur then returned to Nebraska settling on a farm in Geneva. Arthur and Mabel had three daughters Alta Louise born 26 June 1892 in Evansville Wisconsin , May Belle 25 July 1895 in Chicago, Illinois and Pearl 11 April 1901 in Geneva, Nebraska. The family continue to make Nebraska their home until Arthur passed away 19 September 1919. Mabel remained in Nebraska for awhile. The 1920 census has her living with her parents in Taylor Loop Nebraska. Mabel's father John Henry passes away 20 September 1922. Sometime around 1930 Mabel moves to Custer South Dakota to be near two of her daughters. This is where she is found in the 1930 census. Mabel's mother Alta passes away 28 September 1937, sister Myrtle Alta on 11 December 1939 and her daughter Alta on 21 February 1944. Mabel lives to be 73 years old and dies 14 March 1946. There is a bit of confusion to where Mabel died. My aunt Alice the genealogist wrote that she died in Arkansas and Ancestry has a death certificate for Mabel J Hall dying in South Dakota the same date. Either Aunt Alice miss wrote the place of death or the death certificate was for a different Mabel. This is one mystery to further search. I know little about Mabel other than the details from census and other family notes with birth dates and death dates. I wish I had some letters or stories about her. Will continue to do my searches and hopefully will find something someday.

1992 Christmas Gift 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair Souvenir

As Christmas nears memories come from years past . Christmas really felt like Christmas then.
My parents , brother , uncle and aunts were still with us. We would gather at my mother's home for dinner and gifts.
Christmas is still great but I miss my parents and now my brother David especially so never the same.
During the 1990s my mother started to give gifts for Christmas that were memories or treasures rather than a gift bought or cash. I always treasured these gifts and waited with excitement to see what I would receive this year.

This is a letter from December 1992 , just seeing her writing is a gift.  Mom left us February 1998 and dad September 2008.

Here is my letter and gift that year

Dec 1992

Merry Christmas
I don't know what they all are
but they were popular in the early
1900s ( perhaps in the 1800s
They use to hang them on the wall
as you can see its a momento
from the World's Fair (in Chicago)
1893. Be careful when you
handle it the material is like
fiberglass It'll stick into your
skin like splinters and boy hard
to get out.  I've gotten some
under a fingernail
This was from among
some things we got from
Art's grandma estate Her
name was Mabel Hall ( Coleman)
Evidently they attended the fair
That would be a after Arts
Mom ( Alta ) was born (1892) so Mabel would
be in her 20s. Art says he thinks his grandfather Arthur
Hall was a carpenter and built
part of the building for the fair.

This gift was the start of my collection from that fair.  I have a ruby red souvenir glass I paid way to much for , tickets to the fair,  souvenir books and glass slides.
Interesting note is when she gave me this family treasure it was 99 years old. Now it is 126 years old and has passed from my great grandmother Mabel Coleman Hall to my father Arthur R Zion to me.

All wonderful pieces of history that I treasure.

Soon I will have to gather all my 1893 Chicago World Fair treasures to pass on to the safety of other family members to protect.

Merry Christmas to all 2019

Obituary Sunday Mabel Jane Coleman Hall July 1st 1891 to March 14 1946

Today I am sharing the obituary of my great grandmother. Her daughter Alta is my grandmother on my father's side.

Mrs Mabel Jane Coleman Hall was born on July 1st 1872 at Greenwood Nebraska.  The greater part of her early childhood was spent at that place.  She spent her youth with her parents who moved a number of times.
On August 28th 1891, she was married to Arthur R Hall at Denver Colorado.  Soon the newly married couple left this territory to make

their home for four years in Chicago, Illinois. They returned from there to Nebraska, settling on a farm at Geneva.  After leaving Geneva they continued to make their home in the state of Nebraska until the death of Mr. Hall, which occurred in 1919.  Mrs Hall remained in Nebraska until 1923, when she finally came to the black hills territory and made her home with her two daughters, Mrs George Sturm and Mrs Frank Sauer near Custer, So Dakota.
She was received into communion with the Triune  God in holy baptism at Geneva, Nebraska. Sixteen years ago she was received into communicant membership of the Lutheran Church by  Pastor John Wild, through the rite of confirmation.  Mrs Hall was truly a faithful Christian and knew and loved her Savior, Jesus Christ.
One brother, Elmer Coleman of Taylor Nebraska and one sister Mrs. Mary Wirsig of  Berryville, Arkansas are grieved by her parting.  Of her own family she had to part with her oldest daughter, Alta two years ago, when she was laid to rest.  Two daughters bid her farewell today in tears, namely Mrs. George Sturm and Mrs. Frank Sauer, together with their husbands.  In addition there are twelve grand children and 13 great grandchildren that mourn her passing

Oh God of all comfort, we pray Thee fervently to be Thou at the side of the mourning and sustain them with the consolation of Thy Holy Word.

Wordless ( Almost ) Wednesday Remembering Great Grandma Mabel Coleman Hall

Distant cousin Judy emailed me wanting  a link to family information on great grandmother Mabel (Coleman) Hall.  I love these emails from family. Gives me reason to stop and take another look at my family history/ research.
Great grandma Mabel was born 1st of July of 1872 in Nebraska and passed away on the 14th of March 1946 in South Dakato where she was living with daughter Pearl. Grandma married Arthur Hall and together they had three girls. My grandma Alta, Belle and Pearl who is the grandma of my cousin Judy.
Grandma died 2 1/2 years before I was born and two years after my grandma Alta who passed away on the 21st of February 1944.
I never met either grandma but still I feel their strength within myself. If I am quiet enough I can almost hear grandma Alta whisper in my ear. My middle name is the same as grandma Alta and Mabel's mother's name was Alta so I share this name with both of them.
I probably have shared this picture before of Mabel but I love this picture. I see strength, humor and bit of spunk in that face.

I also see in this face gentleness. I am guessing this was taken in Washington some time before my grandmother Alta passed away.

Thanks for stopping by for Almost Wordless Wednesday as I share a bit about my great grandmother Mabel.

Advent Calendar Day 22 Christmas and Deceased Relatives

Advent Calendar - Day 22 is about Christmas and deceased relatives.

As a young child we did not visit the cemetery at Christmas. Growing up in Minnesota the grave stones were covered deep with snow and some of the cemetery is even closed due to road conditions.
As an adult with my parents and grandparents gone Christmas is not the same with out them.

I have been spending time these last days going through boxes of pictures and scanning them to put on http://www.ancestry.com/ and attempting to put some organization to them. That has brought a lot of smiles to my face as I look at old pictures.

The Life And Times Of Mabel Jane Coleman Hall

The life and times of Mabel Jane Coleman Hall

Mabel was born 01 July 1872 to John Henry Coleman and Alta Angeline Cheuvront Coleman at Greenwood, Nebraska. Mabel was their second child, their first daughter, and one of my great grandmother on my father's side . Her brother Elic was in 13 October 1868 in Salt Creek Cass county, Nebraska. Within a few years she has a brother Elmer born 09 April 1874, sister Alta Myrtle is born 27 February 1876 and sister Mary Crystal is born 17 March 1880.
What was life like at this time frame of the early 1870's to the 1880 period. The Coleman family lived in Greenwood, Cass County Nebraska.
The following is from the Cass County historical society.
The old depot and a modern elevator tower mark the location of Greenwood, said to be named for its first resident, an Indian trapper. Greenwood is located at the west most end of Cass County, just four miles south of the Saunders County line and one mile from the Lancaster line. The first resident of this area was Silas Greenwood, an Indian trapper and hunter who lived with his white wife and family in a dugout along Salt Creek in the early 1860's. The village was named for him.
In 1869, when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad built its line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln, a station was needed in this area. Farmers residing nearby purchased land from Smith C Bethel and donated it to the B&MR with the promise that $10,000 worth of improvement would be invested. " The land was subsequently transferred to the South Platte Land Company who ( in 1882) still held it and have not sold to individual residents. "
Bethel built a store near the rock grade and was named postmaster of " Greenwood" in 1870. With the tracks completed, the depot opened for business in July of that year. By 1880 the population had reached 200. The town was incorporated in 1883 and by 1885 the population had reached 840.
The Congregational Church organized and a church built in 1873, followed by the Christian Church in 1874.
The first school was a mile or south of town. In 1878 a school with a " seating capacity of 100" was built. The first class to graduate was in 1890, and a new schoolhouse was built in 1907.

Finding My Great Grandparents Arthur and Mabel Hall

Once again the Internet and emails to the rescue. Last week I wanted to see if I could find the gravestones at http://www.findagrave.com/ for my great grandparents Arthur and Mabel (Coleman) Hall to no avail.

My information had them buried at Crawford Nebraska but I could find no picture of their graves. I found contributors to the cemeteries in that area and sent off a couple of requests for help.

Yesterday I received an email giving me this web site http://nebraskagravestones.org/

and that I would find my family their at City Cemetery in Crawford.

One more piece of information to put into my family book.

One interesting piece of history of Crawford Nebraska can be found at their home page. They have put this bit of history there. " Established in 1886 as a new community along the Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad just outside the Fort Robinson military reservation, Crawford was named in honor of Captain Emmet Crawford, formerly stationed at the nearby post and who had just recently been killed by Mexican irregulars along the U. S. Mexico border. The town soon gained a reputation as the toughest in the west, with saloons outnumbering churches. The arrival of a second railroad , the Burlington Quincy line provided additional boost to the community.
My family history has that Arthur moved to Nebraska in 1898 and lived in Geneva and Taylor. They moved to Crawford in 1919. He passed away in June of that year of hardening of the arteries around the heart.

I am nowhere  done searching for my roots. For my missing family members.  So many to fine so little time.  This has been a hard few years ...
