Mabel Jane Coleman (1872 - 1946) is #11 on my ahnentafel, my great grandmother who married

#10 Arthur Hall (1863 - 1919) on 28th of August 1891 in Colorado.

I am descended through their daughter # 5 Alta Louisa Hall (1892 - 1944) who married # 4 Perry G Zion

 ( 1886 - 1958) in Taylor Loup, Nebraska.

Mabel was born to John Henry Coleman and Alta Angeline Cheuvront.  1st of July 1872 in Greenwood
Nebraska. Mabel was the second of five children

Child 1 Elic Lemuel Coleman (1868-1944)
Child 2 Mabel Jane Coleman (1872 - 1946)
Child 3 Elmer Coleman ( 1875 - 1947)
Child 4 Myrtle Alta Coleman (1876-1939)
Child 5 Mary (1880- 1964)

The Coleman family lived in Greenwood, Cass County Nebraska.
The first school was a mile or south of town. In 1878 a school with a " seating capacity of 100" was built. The first class to graduate was in 1890, and a new schoolhouse was built in 1907.
In 1880 Greenwood had three elevators.
Mabel lost her paternal grandfather Elic Chalker Coleman 01 September 1873 at the age of 1 and her paternal grandmother Catherine Beiler Coleman 01 December 1884 in Greenwood Nebraska when she was 12 years old.
During her early years the president was Ulysses S Grant ( 1869 - 1877 ) Rutherford B Hayes who served 1877 - 1887 ).
Mabel continued to live in Nebraska with her family until she met and married Arthur R Hall in Denver Colorado 28 August 1891. Soon after the happily married couple left Nebraska to live in Chicago for four years. This was during the period of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and Arthur was a carpenter and probably worked on the building of the fair. Mabel and Arthur then returned to Nebraska settling on a farm in Geneva. Arthur and Mabel had three daughters Alta Louise born 26 June 1892 in Evansville Wisconsin , May Belle 25 July 1895 in Chicago, Illinois and Pearl 11 April 1901 in Geneva, Nebraska. The family continue to make Nebraska their home until Arthur passed away 19 September 1919. Mabel remained in Nebraska for awhile. The 1920 census has her living with her parents in Taylor Loop Nebraska. Mabel's father John Henry passes away 20 September 1922. Sometime around 1930 Mabel moves to Custer South Dakota to be near two of her daughters. This is where she is found in the 1930 census. Mabel's mother Alta passes away 28 September 1937, sister Myrtle Alta on 11 December 1939 and her daughter Alta on 21 February 1944. Mabel lives to be 73 years old and dies 14 March 1946. There is a bit of confusion to where Mabel died. My aunt Alice the genealogist wrote that she died in Arkansas and Ancestry has a death certificate for Mabel J Hall dying in South Dakota the same date. Either Aunt Alice miss wrote the place of death or the death certificate was for a different Mabel. This is one mystery to further search. I know little about Mabel other than the details from census and other family notes with birth dates and death dates. I wish I had some letters or stories about her. Will continue to do my searches and hopefully will find something someday.

Which Alta Is It ? Mother or Daughter Puzzle Solved

While wandering ancestry today I was searching hints of the siblings of my great grandmother Mabel Coleman Hall.  I found a picture linked to her sister Myrtle Alta Coleman Oberkotter.
The contributor had it linked to Myrtle and stated back said Aunt Alta age 82.
The dress led me to the 1930s and since both women lived to late 1930s the dress fit.  Except for the fact that Myrtle was born 1876 and died 1939 at the age of 63 years old while her mother Alta Cheuvront Coleman was born 1848 and lived to 1937 age of 89.
Mystery solved this wonderful photo is my great great grandmother Alta rather than my 2nd great aunt.
I love having this photo of grandma Alta at 82 years old.

So many Ancestors So Little Time To Research Tonight The Coleman Family

I find my days filled with every day chores, appointments and time with family and friends.

But on mind during the day at least time is a deceased ancestor and wanting to learn

more about them and their time on earth.

Tonight I decided  to pull out my Coleman family note book to see what I have and what is missing.

So much is missing is information on the siblings of my family line.

Tonight I searched ancestry for hints on Elic Chalker Jr Coleman 1843 -1924 my 3rd great uncle.

I checked and approved the hints, then printed out Life Story summary and fact sheet.

On my to do list is to go to office store and buy more ink and dividers for my notebooks.

One thing I knew but was reminded of tonight is that my Elic Jr was in the Civil War.

Many of my ancestors fought in all wars including that war.

On my to do list is to note each of my ancestors who fought in the Civil War and

 what division they were in.

I will probably find that some fought on both sides of the war.

So many questions so little time.

Climbing My Family Tree One Limb At A Time ~ Coleman, Cheuvront and Rouse limbs

I recently shared a picture of my great grandma Mabel Coleman Hall here on my blog and on my personal facebook page. I wonder some times how I can get my sons and grandchildren as interested in our family history as I am.
I look at their pictures and census reports and wonder about their lives. All we have are dates and maybe a story here or there but so much is missing.
At least we do have pictures sometimes that are passed on by others.
This picture is of my great grandma Mabel Coleman's motherj Alta. She is standing in the back row on the right hand side. Her name is Alta Cheauvront Coleman. She married John Henry Coleman and together they had five children. Elic, Mabel, Elmer, Myrtle and Mary with Mabel being my ancestor.
Sitting in the front row is Lemuel G Cheuvront and Mary Polly Rouse Cheuvront.
If you search back far enough in their trees you will find that their descendants fought in the American Revolutionary War.
The other two family members are Thomas J Cheuvront and Sarah Cheuvront Metheny. There was another sister Lourinda Cheuvront Chapin but she passed away in 1869.
These tree limbs are of my great great grandmother Alta who I am named after and my great great great grandparents.

Was Great Great Great Grandpa Coleman Counted Twice In The 1860 Census?

Just this week I was on http://www.ancestry.com/ and searching for information on my Coleman line. My great great great grandfather Alexander ( Elic ) Coleman was born 10 January 1805 in Connecticut, traveled west and ended up in Nebraska where he passed away on 01 September 1873

I found him in the 1860 Iowa census on 21st of July listed as Alexander. Living with him is his wife Kate and 9 children.

I was on the hunt for Alexander in the 1870 census and could not find him. At this time I decided to add his nick name of "Elic' at http://www.ancestry.com/ and a leaf came up with a hint.

I though Yea it is the 1870 census, but no it was another 1860 census for Elic Coleman. First thought was no way but went and looked at it. It was from the area in Nebraska where he had lived but I did not recognize any names of the people in the house he was living There was another Coleman listed in the home . I left that census and keep searching for him in 1870 with still no luck.

I then decided to go back to the 1860 Nebraska census and look again to the name of a Coleman man living in this house with Elic and it was William which was one of Elic's son's name.

I looked at the others living in the area and they are all names that I recognized.

This census was taken 17th August 1860. It seems that Alexander / Elic was in Iowa when that census was taken then left and traveled to Nebraska with his son William to visit family and friends and get land to settle with his family.

So while being counted twice in the 1860 census can be confusing, I did find when he went to Nebraska to settle, bringing the rest of his family at a later time.

The Nebraska state census taken in 1877 I have found Alexander's son John Henry and his family.
Checking the 1880 census I found Catherine as head of house and living with her is daughter Jane and a Hester Paul. Hester was unknown to me but by looking at the relationship I found that she was the younger sister of the head of house and that she was widowed. I now have a sibling of Catherine that I did not know of. A new relative to search in the future.
The census's are great tools. They can tell us where our family lived and who were their neighbors.
The hunt continues another day..
Thanks for stopping by.. Grace

The Life And Times Of Mabel Jane Coleman Hall

The life and times of Mabel Jane Coleman Hall

Mabel was born 01 July 1872 to John Henry Coleman and Alta Angeline Cheuvront Coleman at Greenwood, Nebraska. Mabel was their second child, their first daughter, and one of my great grandmother on my father's side . Her brother Elic was in 13 October 1868 in Salt Creek Cass county, Nebraska. Within a few years she has a brother Elmer born 09 April 1874, sister Alta Myrtle is born 27 February 1876 and sister Mary Crystal is born 17 March 1880.
What was life like at this time frame of the early 1870's to the 1880 period. The Coleman family lived in Greenwood, Cass County Nebraska.
The following is from the Cass County historical society.
The old depot and a modern elevator tower mark the location of Greenwood, said to be named for its first resident, an Indian trapper. Greenwood is located at the west most end of Cass County, just four miles south of the Saunders County line and one mile from the Lancaster line. The first resident of this area was Silas Greenwood, an Indian trapper and hunter who lived with his white wife and family in a dugout along Salt Creek in the early 1860's. The village was named for him.
In 1869, when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad built its line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln, a station was needed in this area. Farmers residing nearby purchased land from Smith C Bethel and donated it to the B&MR with the promise that $10,000 worth of improvement would be invested. " The land was subsequently transferred to the South Platte Land Company who ( in 1882) still held it and have not sold to individual residents. "
Bethel built a store near the rock grade and was named postmaster of " Greenwood" in 1870. With the tracks completed, the depot opened for business in July of that year. By 1880 the population had reached 200. The town was incorporated in 1883 and by 1885 the population had reached 840.
The Congregational Church organized and a church built in 1873, followed by the Christian Church in 1874.
Meet My Great Aunt 3x Removed the Postmistress of Greenwood Nebraska

I have seen ads on the TV for http://www.ancestry.com/ with someone stating my ancestor was a postmaster. Little did I know I had not only a postmaster in my family but a postmistress.

I have been working on getting to know my Coleman line lately. Tonight while searching old newspapers on http://www.ancestry.com/ with the name Coleman listed I found a small statement on my 2nd great grand uncle Elic Chalker Colman Jr.

In the Nebraska State Journal ( Lincoln Nebraska) Jan 24 1900 it is written E.C. Coleman was today appointed postmaster at Greenwood, Cass county, Nebraska. Elic is one of my great great grandfather John Henry's brothers.

Next went and searched the 1900 census to see if this was my E C Coleman and sure enough he is listed in the census as the postmaster. The census was done the 13th and 14th days of June.

Elic is 57 years old and living with his wife Nancy ( Loder), daughters Catherine, Isa, Martha, Lula and sons Lloyd, Myron and Elmer. Elic and Nancy have been married 32 years.

In the 1910 census Elic is still listed as the postmaster of Greenwood. He is listed as 66 years old and lives with wife Nancy, daughter Catherine and sons Lloyd and Elmer.

One more census to check is the 1920's and he is now 77 years old and listed as a farmer. Living him is his wife Nancy , daughter Catherine and son Lloyd. Lloyd is listed as having no occupation but Catherine is listed as the postmistress.

This is the 1920's also known as the roaring twenties or the Jazz age. Warren G. Harding becomes the president after Woodrow Wilson.

The Women's suffrage campaign leads to numerous countries granting women the right to vote and be elected. I was curious how a woman was treated in the postal system in the 1920's and before. I found this interesting article at http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/WomenHistory/women_history/history_reconstruction.html

Women were encouraged to not marry if they wanted to work in the postal system in the early 1900's. Catherine never married and in the 1930's census she is listed living alone and renting.

Catherine was born November 3rd 1868 and died November 20 1942.

I think Catherine was a pioneer for women and I am proud that she is my first cousin 3 times removed. I look forward to seeing if I can find more about her in my future searches.

I have more interesting information on my uncle Elic Jr and will share that soon, but for now I can do a TV ad about have a postmaster in my family.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Degrees of Separation

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Degrees of Separation over at http://www.geneamusings.com/

Find an ancestral line that stretches back to the time of the US Revolutionary War (1775-1783), about 230 years. Define your person-to-person connection (the person actually met the next person on the list) back to a historical figure from that time.

1. Me ( 1948 to ???) I knew my daddy of course ( 1922 - 2009).

2. I am pretty sure my dad met his maternal grandmother Mabel Coleman. (1872 - 1946)

3. I would think that that Mabel would of known her maternal grandfather Lemuel Cheuvront ( 1812 - 1896)

4. Lemuel Cheuvront probably knew his paternal grandfather Joseph Cheuvront.

5. Joseph is my Revolutionary war veteran . Joseph was born in France 1755 near the Swiss border. Family tradition says he was born to Roman Catholic Parents and was educated to by them for the priesthood. While yet in his teens he came in touch with the Methodist and accepted their faith to the great displeasure and grief of his parents. His parents disowned him and mourned him as dead. He became a stowaway on a vessel bound for America and upon arrival in New York was " bound out " to John Ellsworth who paid the captain for his passage. Joseph married John's daughter Elizabeth. They had six children. Joseph enlisted in the American Revolutionary war in Spring 1780 and continued his service until the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, October 19, 1781.
Joseph's wife Elizabeth died and he remarried Sarah.
Notes say his record of service has been recorded at the DAR and membership granted his descendants. Joseph died March 31, 1832. I started an application and did not get far. Need to try again with help from a member of the DAR.

Maybe Joseph met George Washington. I probably will never know but I am proud of Joseph my fifth great grandfather.
So that is 4 generations to my ancestor and 5 to George Washington.
I have visited the National Archives in Washington D. C. and have some papers requesting pension from his wife Sarah.

Next ancestor is John Rouse.

1. Me ( 1948 to ???) I knew my daddy of course ( 1922 - 2009).

2. I am pretty sure my dad met his maternal grandmother Mabel Coleman. (1872 - 1946)

3. I would think that that Mabel would of known her maternal grandmother Mary Rouse ( wife of Lemuel Cheuvront from above ancestor) ( 1813 - 1904 )

4. Mary Rouse probably new her paternal grandfather Smith Rouse ( 1769 - 1840)

5. Smith Rouse's father was John Doty Rouse born Dec 9 1741 in New York. Married Hannah Smith. I have the records of his service from the National Archives. The records say he served 11 months actual service as a lieutenant and captain in the N. Y. troops, Revolutionary war; part of the time he served under Capt. Thompson and Col. Graham. He enlisted at Northeast N. Y. John died January 19, 1834 New York

That is 4 generations to John Doty Rouse who maybe met George Washington.

My third known ancestor to be in the Revolutionary war would be Ebenezer Coleman Sr ( 1731 to 1824).
This line once again begins with my great grandmother Mabel Coleman

3. Mabel would of known her paternal grandfather Elic Chalker Coleman Sr. (1805 - 1873)

4. Elic Chalker Coleman would of known his paternal grandfather Ebenezer Sr. (1731 -1824)

5. Ebenezer was in the Revolutionary war per family history. I do not have his papers handy to get further information or neglected to get them when visiting Washington D C years ago. Further research needed her.

Interesting to note Mabel had 3 ancestors in the Revolutionary war. The fourth grandparent would be on the Beiler line and I do not know much of this family's history.

Thanks for stopping by tonight and viewing some of my family history. Hope to see you again someday. Grace

Tracing My Coleman Family Line From England part 1

I can trace my Coleman line back to Thomas Coleman who was born in Svesham, Worcester, England in 1598. Thomas is my 9th great grandfather. Parents unknown at this time.
At http://www.ancestry.com/ I find that he married Katherine Higginson, Frances Albright, and Francis Belcher. I believe that Katherine Higginson is my ancestor John's mother. John was born in 1635 Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.
Thomas married the two Frances after John's birth date.
There are three marriages for Thomas. First is to Katherine, April 22, 1619 with no source noted. Second one in 1646 to Francis Albright

and Francis Belcher in 1650.
These are sourced on marriage records at http://www.ancestry.com/
Also I found Passenger and Immigration list index telling that Thomas came in 1635 the same year that John was born. Name of ship unknown at this time. Katherine either got pregnant during the trip to the United States or after arriving in America. The trip from England to America would of taken about two months.
At Ancesry I found a biography on Thomas Coleman, this will give me further sources to read when I can get to a genealogy center that carry these sources. The biography itself is very small with not much more to learn than what I have.
It mentions his son John saying he was a freeman and that he probably removed to Hatfield, Massachusetts in 1659. That his first wife was killed in 1677 , along with daughter Bethia. This could of happen during the Indian wars . http://www.hampshirecountyhistory.com/hatfield/barber/index.html
http://www.hampshirecountyhistory.com/

Each of us has a family story to tell. My family stories mainly begin with the beginning of settling of America. History full of excitement, adventure, births, deaths and hardship.

Hope that you will join me again as I continue to tell my family story.

Nebraska State Census at Ancestry.com

Ancestry.com announced the release of the Nebraska State Census records for 1860 to 1885 today. You can read about it at Crista Cowan's blog post Ancestry World Archives Project Releases Nebraska State Census, 1860-1885.

I had family living in Nebraska at this time. So far I have found my great great grandparents in the census. John Coleman is living with his wife Alta Cheuvront Coleman and daughter's Alta M ( Myrtle), Mable Coleman Hall ( my great grandmother) and brother's Elic Henry and a Frank Matheny who I think was a hired hand.

I love the new opportunity of finding new areas to research my family at www.ancestry.com

Happy Birthday Great Grand Uncle Elic

Today my great grand uncle Elic Lemuel Coleman would be 141 years old if alive.
He was born Oct 13 1868 to John Henry Coleman and Alta Cheuvront and passed away Nov 1 1944.

He was married twice, first to Alta Elliot and then to Dora Shelton. He had a total of eight children. The 1900 census has him renting, a carpenter and living in Nebraska.

Picture is of John Henry, Alta and their 5 children.

The birthday boy is top row first on left. How handsome he was. Standing next to him is my Great Grandma Mabel Coleman Hall.

These old pictures are treasures from the past. I am so thankful that those family members who have them share with us who do not. This picture is from a family history book.

Happy Birthday Uncle Elic. Your family is thinking of you today.

Who Were My Great Grandparents Part 8

This the last of my Great Grandparents. Number 8 is Mabel Jane Coleman.

Mabel was born July 1st 1872 in Greenwood, Nebraska to John Henry and Alta Angeline ( Cheuvront ) Coleman. She was the second born of five children having two brothers Elic and Elmer and two sisters Alta and Mary.

The early years of her life was spent in Nebraska. Her parents traveled many times during her youth.

She married Arthur Hall in Denver Colorado August 28, 1891. They had three daughters. The oldest being my grandma Alta.

She was a christian woman being baptised in Nebraska and later years became a member of the Lutheran Church her last twelve years. She spent her last years in the Black Hills territory with her two daughters Mae and Pearl after her husband Arthur passed away.

She passed away March 1946 in Arkansas while visiting her sister Mary Wirsig and is now buried in Crawford, Nebraska next to her husband.

I am nowhere  done searching for my roots. For my missing family members.  So many to fine so little time.  This has been a hard few years ...
