Found On The Internet Etta Zion Pall Bearer of Malissa McLaughlin Ryan 1885
Found at newpapers for Decatur County, Iowa
Decatur County Journal
April l, l885
DIED--At her home near Tuskeego, March 29th, l885, MRS. ELIJAH [Malissa E. (McLaughlin)] RYAN,
aged l9 years, 2 months and 25 days, oldest daughter of AMOS and MARY
MCLAUGHLIN.
The deceased was born in Decatur County, Iowa, January 2nd, l867. At
the age of l7, she united with the Baptist Church, of which she was a
devoted member till her death. On January lst, l885, she married ELIJA
RYAN.
The funeral services were conducted by the REV. AUXIER--the text chosen
was the thirty-fifth verse of the eleventh chapter of St. John.
Her father died in l876, but this is the second death in her mother's
family, consisting of two daughters and three sons. Those surviving her
are two brothers and one sister, MRS. C. CASH. The entire community
extends to the bereaved husband, mother, brother and sister their most
heartfelt sympathy, as no death ever occurred in the history of our
vicinity that seemed to effect every one so generally as this one. In
the life of MRS. RYAN can be seen the true woman as daughter, wife and
sister. Her very presence was a sure indication of pleasure to every
one, always seeking for the comfort and enjoyment of others and never
losing an opportunity to do a kind act. Her life has passed away, but
the good deeds that she has done yet live and will continue to live in
the hearts of those that knew her.
The exclamation of all as they gazed on her peaceful countenance was,
how beautiful, and we could not help exclaiming:
How calm and peaceful is thy brow,
No sorrow e're can touch thee now;
Life's thorny path has all been trod,
And thou hast gained the blest abode.
The remains were interred in the Elk Cemetery to rest peacefully till
the resurrection morn. MISSES FLORA and LIZZIE SHIELDS, FANNIE PIERCY,
ETTA ZION, DELLA CAMPBELL and REBECCA PAYTON acted as pall bearers.
Farewell, thou loved one gone,
From this cold stormy shore;
O, may we meet when life is done,
Where partings are no more.
NAOMI C. CASH; April lst, l885

(this was very hard to read, but hopefully
all the dates and information are correct.)
Sad note is that Etta Zion who was a pall bearer died herself on December 31st 1890 at the age of 22 years old of tuberculous . She also had married recently before her death.

Obituary Etta Zion Piercy Daughter of John and Mary Cassell Zion Wife of Maley Piercy
Decatur County Journal
January l5, l89l
Died, of consumption, at her home near Lamoni, Iowa, after a lingering
illness, December 3l, l890, at 8:l5 p.m., MRS. ETTA GERTRUDE, wife of
MALEY PIERCY, and daughter of JOHN and MARY ZION; aged 23 years, 3
months and l0 days.
She was born near Decatur City, September 2l, l868, and when but a child
removed with her parents to Bloomington Township, where she has ever
since resided. When l5 years old, she was converted and soon after
united with the Baptist Church, of which she has been a faithful member.
In August, l890, she was united in marriage to MALEY PIERCY of Tuskeego.
Thus a loving companion, dutiful daughter, kind sister, has been taken
from our midst. She will also be missed from the ranks of teachers, as
she had followed that profession successfully for three years. Wherever
she went she made friends and left a good impression in the hearts of
all she met. But nowhere will she be missed as in the home circle, that
has for the first time been broken. The sympathy of the entire
community is extended to the heart-broken young husband in this his
first deep affliction.
During her late illness he was constantly at her bedside, doing all that
human kindness could do but of no avail; and for the bereaved parents,
what a sad homecoming, after she had been laid to her long and final
rest. Funeral services were conducted by the REV. DRAKE, of Ringgold
County.
A FRIEND.

Wednesday Wednesdays Zion Family Southwest Virginia Colonial Times
Tonight on ancestry I found 3 of my Zion ancestors listed in the Annals of Southwest Virginia.
Date Groom Bride Minister
1789 Nov 3 Zion John 4th great grandfather Lucy MacCormack John Frost
1811 Mar 11 Zion Jacob 4th great uncle Caty Fleenor Charles Pennington
1818 Aug 27 Zion McCormack 3rd great grandfather Mary Gobble David Jesse
I was wondering what the marriage customs would be for my ancestors in colonial America
I found an excerpt from an article by historian Alice Morse Earle in the Journal of American Folklore (April June 1893).
The bride and groom and bridal party walked a little procession to the meeting house on the Sabbath following the marriage. We read in Sewall diary of a Sewall bride thus coming out or walking out bride , as it was called in Newburyport Cotton Mather thought it expedient to thus make public with due dignity the marriage. In some communities the attention of the interested public was further drawn to the new married couple in what seems to us a very comic fashion. On the Sabbath following the wedding, the gaily dressed bride and groom occupied a prominent seat in the gallery of the meeting house , and in the middle of the sermon they rose and slowly turned around to display complacently on every side their wedding finery.
Other customs were just before joining hands the Bridegroom quits the place , who is soon followed by the Brides men and , as it were, dragged back to duty.
Did the bride throw a stocking, was there drinking and dancing after the wedding.
I wish I could travel back in time to see where they married , what they wore and what the customs were for the Zions in colonial Virginia.

Female Ancestor Friday Etta Anna Gertrude Zion My great grand aunt
Friday is a perfect time to spend some time with a female ancestor.
Today I am revisiting my great grand aunt Etta Zion
When Etta Anna Gertrude Zion was born on September 21, 1868, in Decatur City, Iowa, her father, John, was 36 and her mother, Mary Cassell , was 33.
She married Maley Percy on August 20, 1890, in Lamoni, Iowa.
She died on December 31, 1890, in Iowa, at the age of 22, and was buried in Lillie, Louisiana.
I find it very sad that she passed away after being married just over two months.
The picture I have of her has her husband cut away. Not sure what that means.
She is buried in Lillie Cemetery in Decatur Iowa under the name of Zion.
As of now I have no new information about her life or death.

Happy 4th of July 2013 My Revolutionary Ancestors
Happy 4th of July 2013, another year we can celebrate our freedom thanks to those who fought for it so many years ago.
I am what is known as a mutt. My ancestors came from several areas in Europe. England, Ireland, France, Germany and Scotland.
One of the firsts was the Day line from England, the Zion line from Germany and Cheauvront line from France.
Fighting in the Revolutionary war were the family names of
Daniel Day 14th Nov 1746 to 1830
Joseph Cheuvront 2nd Feb 1757 to 25 Mar 1832
John Rouse 9th of Dec 1741 to 19th Jan 1834 Pension Files found
Ebenezer Coleman 29th of Oct 1731 to 1824
There were probably other family members who fought in this war and I will be busy searching for their information.
Thanks for stopping by , hope to find the time to spend more time here sharing some of my family information. Grace

How To Lose A Relative With Out Really Trying Mistakes In Census Recordings
Today while sitting at McDonald’s sipping on my soda pop I am wandering Ancestry searching for sources on my McCormick Zion family. I especially want to see what and where his children are going. The 1850 census is missing my McCormick Zion but there is a Dion McCormick. Sure enough after clicking on the census there are my McCormick Zion and his family recorded. Trouble is the person who transcribed the census recorded him as Dion McCormick 55 with wife Elizabeth 52, son John 19 and son Andrew McCormick age 17. In truth this is really McCormick Zion and all the family members with the last name Zion not McCormick. I am hoping by this find I will see what happened to Andrew Zion. Great family stories can come by searching for siblings of our ancestors. John aka Jonathan is my ancestor. I may learn more if I can learn more about Andrew.

SUNDAY Obituary of Finnetta Gannaway Zion died the 12 August 1881 Pleasant Grove, Des Moines County, Iowa, USA
This last weekend I have been busy searching on ancestry and find a grave for relatives. Distant relatives but relatives. I love to find the tombstones of family members. It is that last piece of some ones life and when I see a family name on a tombstone I know that is my family. If I am in the cemetery I will touch the stone and wonder about them. If I am on line seeing a family stone for the first time I will touch my screen and wonder about this family member.
Today I am featuring and remembering a family member through marriage. This is the obituary of Finneta Gannaway who married one of my third great grand uncles Jacob C Zion. Jacob was her second husband. Jacob is brothers to my third great grandfather McCormick Zion

Well that is it for Sunday Obituary sharing. Have a great day, and if you think we may be related please let me know.. Grace
Today I am featuring and remembering a family member through marriage. This is the obituary of Finneta Gannaway who married one of my third great grand uncles Jacob C Zion. Jacob was her second husband. Jacob is brothers to my third great grandfather McCormick Zion

On the 4th inst occurred the death of Mrs. Nettie Zion, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Shelladay, 4 miles northeast of New London.
Mrs. Zion was just recovering from a severe spell of sickness which had confined her to bed for several weeks, when she was again stricken down, this time with stroke of paralysis. In this, her last illness, she was unable to speak during the entire time, covering a space of more than 4 months, and a great portion of that time could not turn herself in bed.
The funeral took place at the church at Pleasant Grove, yesterday, and the remains laid to rest by the side of her last husband in the cemetery at that place. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Carter, of the C.P. church, of which she was also a member.
She was born in Buckingham county, VA, Aug.27th 1805. Was married to Wm. Williams, Aug. 1823, who died in 1833. Married again in July 1836 to Jacob Zion, who died Sept. 1869.
Her first marriage was blessed with six children, two of whom are yet alive, and three by her second, one of whom survives his mother.
Interesting family history tidbit is that Finnetta's sister Elizabeth " Betty " was married to Jacobs son John D. Zion. So John's sister in law married his father so she was his step mother and his sister in law. And though only related through marriage interesting tidbit is that Finnetta's and Betty's parents William the 2nd and Sarah " Sally" were cousins. Not sure if first cousins or later but still cousins which probably was some what common then.Well that is it for Sunday Obituary sharing. Have a great day, and if you think we may be related please let me know.. Grace

Amanuensis Monday 07 Notes On John W Zion b abt 1770 d Bef 1850
Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog) started his own Monday blog theme many months ago called Amanuensis Monday. What does "amanuensis" mean?John offers this definition:"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."
For today's Amanuensis Monday I am sharing information on the earliest Zion I have in my Zion family tree. Zion is my maiden name.
John W Zion is the first name found in this family. As of yet no other records have been confirmed to who his father is. It is believed his father's name is Zion.
John is the head of the family and appears in Washington County, Virginia in 1789 where he married, November 3, 1789 by John Frost, to Lucy McCormick, born 1722 in Bedford County, Virginia, daughter of William and Agness ( Agnes) McCormick of Bedford County, formerly of Hanover County.
Lucy McCormick's father died in 1775, and after his death, Lucy became the ward of William and Lucy adams, by order of the Court. It is believed that William and Lucy were Lucy's grandparents. This has not been confirmed with recorded facts of yet.
Source Early Settlers of Lee County, Va , Bales , Hattie Byrd Muncy page 541. I do not own this book. How great that would be.
Thanks for stopping by.. think I will go and search for this book to see if available on Amazon. Grace

Writing Tips for Genealogy Researchers ~ Writing Our Family Story The ZION line
Good morning everyone
This morning I received an email from Family Tree regarding Writing Tips for Genealogy Researchers. They are offering the opportunity to write your family history with the help of Abbott Press. While a great idea is a costy idea for me to tackle at this time. I was interested enough to click on the link and find out that tip 3 is JUST WRITE.
Do you have a feisty great-great grandmother you admire? A long line of war veterans? Decide what topic is most noteworthy and branch off from it to discuss your other research.
Don't get too detailed, but decide how you'll divide the chapters (chronologically, by branch, geographically, etc.), and what sort of information you'll want to include.
I have some books written on at least 2 of my ancestors that were written by others. They are a great way to start my personal family stories. The quest is to really just start writing. But where to start is the stopping point. Do I write several small books on my different branches or one big book.
I feel the best way to start is to separate it into 2 branches and then start the outline.
Since I do have a book on part of my mother's line I will start with my father's family the ZION family name and branch from there.
I love this picture of John Dees Pennington and Rachel Zion Pennington. Rachel is my third great grand aunt sister of McCormick my third great grandfather. Rachel is wearing glasses but they are perched on her forhead.
Hope that you will join me as I begin my New Year project of putting my family history into words for future generations. Thanks for stopping by.. Grace

Getting To Know Great Uncle Norton Zion
Tonight I thought I would see what more I could find on my grandfather Perry's brother Norton Zion at http://www.ancestry.com/ . I do not think I ever met him. He died on November 26,1957 and was living in Farmington, New Mexico. I only met my grandfather Perry a couple of times and he lived in Winlock, Washington.
Norton was born to Jonathan and Rachel Millsap in Tuskega, Decatur, Iowa on the 11th of May 1889. They resided in Iowa,Minnesota, Nebraska and Colorado as a family.
Norton was born to Jonathan and Rachel Millsap in Tuskega, Decatur, Iowa on the 11th of May 1889. They resided in Iowa,Minnesota, Nebraska and Colorado as a family.
The 1910 census has him with his parents in Nebraska and working on the family farm.
In 1917 he registered for World War 1. The family is living in Grand Junction, Colorado. The registration form tells me that he is tall and has a medium built. His hair is brown and has blue eyes. It states he is working on the family farm and has a disability, having only one eye. Not sure when he lost his eye but probably happened in a farming accident.
On the 24th of October 1917 Norton marries Roxanna Evelyn Stevenson in Grand Junction, Colorado. This marriage brought six children three girls and three boys. Nellie, Norma, Ruth, Ivan 1918, Robert 1921 and James 1924. I do not have the birth dates of the girls yet.
By 1941 Norton and his family are living in Spanaway, Washington when he registered for World War 2. The registration form tells us that he is working in the Seattle/ Tacoma Washington ship yard.

Most of this information I knew already. What I learned new was on the WWW 1 registration form. I learnt his physical description and that he had lost an eye. What I have not found is the 1920 or the 1930 census'. I spent some time last night looking around http://www.ancestry.com/. with no success.
In the 1920 census I found his father and sister Gertrude living in Colorado but could not find him near by.

I will continue my search by looking at his siblings and two grandfathers John Henderson Zion and Flavious Millsap to see if he was living near them. I do not know Norton's middle name, if he evan has one so can not use this in the census searches. I do have his sisters names from the obituary. If I search for them with their married names I may find him. With the last name Zion it should not be so hard to find him so the search will continue. I also searched www.findagrave.com and did not find anything there on Norton as of yet.
Thanks for stopping by as share the researching of my family... Grace

Sentimental Sunday Meet My Great Grand Aunt Etta Anna Zion

I just found this photo on http://www.ancestry.com/ in the last few days. It was posted by a distant cousin Soozinn3 on her family page. After contacting her I learnt she had inherited the photo and was happy to share the photos with relatives.
I would like to introduce you to my great grand Aunt Etta Anna Gertrude Zion
Etta was born 21st of September 1868 Decatur County, Iowa and passed away 31st of December 1890 Lamoni, Decatur, Iowa.
I would like to introduce you to my great grand Aunt Etta Anna Gertrude Zion
Etta was born 21st of September 1868 Decatur County, Iowa and passed away 31st of December 1890 Lamoni, Decatur, Iowa.
She was only 22 years old and I really know very little of her. How did she die so young. Was it an accident or illness that caused her early death.
She was born to John Henderson and Mary (Cassell) Zion and had four siblings Mary, William, Jonathan Adam ( my great grandfather).
I find this photo very interesting. She appears to be in her early 20's so close to the time she passes away. She is holding on to a pole which could be an umbrella and there is someone standing next to her, but all you can see is an arm and a shoe and a small part of his body.
I went to Soozin family page on http://www.ancestry.com/ to see what she had on Etta and found that Etta had married a Maley Percy the 20th of August, 1890 just two months before her death. How sad is that.
From that knowledge I feel this could be a wedding or engagement picture with Maley and for some reason some one left him out of the picture when they had this printed. Could this even be a postmortem photo printed after she passed away to show she had died? That is what I think it is.
Another interesting fact is the Iowa Cemetery Records have her listed as Etta G Zion. She is buried in the Lillie cemetery where her parents are buried.
The more I think of her, the more I want to know about my great grand aunt Etta Anna Gertrude Zion.

Wordless Wednesday Almost Sharing Photo of Rachel Zion Pennington
Wordless Wednesday is not for me so I always go for Not So Wordless Wednesday. I want to show you the wonderful photo I found last night on http://www.ancestry.com/. This is my great great great great aunt Rachel Zion Pennington. I just love this picture. That half smile on Rachel is the kind of smile my dad gave us the last years of his life. Rachel was born 22 January 1807 in Washington County, Virginian to John W Zion and Lucy McCormick Zion and passed away 15 June 1885. Rachel married John Dees Parrington 02 January 1823 in Tennessee. Rachel and John had 12 children.
If you look closely you will see that Rachel has her glasses pushed up on her forehead. Thanks to Missy for sharing this on www.ancestry.com .
Hope that you have enjoyed this great photo and will stop by again soon.. Grace
