OBITUARY Rachel Millsap Zion Dies on Mother's Day 1862 - 1945

Obituary Rachel Millsap Zion Adding another obituary to my files

     Mrs Rachel Ann Zion, 83 of Chehalis died Sunday morning of a heart attack while spending mother's day with her son Norton Zion of R 1 Box 224 Spanaway.
     Mrs Zion was the first of an Iowa family of 10 children to die.  She was a member of the Christian Church of Craig Colorado and had resided in Washington state for 14 years. Funeral services were to be held Monday at 3 pm at Tuell's Chapel, the Rev Merlin Hill officiating.  The body will be sent to  Craig Colorado for burial.
      Besides her son of Spanaway Mrs Zion is survived by another son Perry G Zion of Winlock Washington ; three daughters Mrs Etta Exley of  Chelhais, Mrs Gertrude Seick  Tacoma, and Mrs Betsy Waters of Palisade , Colorado; five brothers George Millsap Kellogg, Idaho, Frank and Arthur of Syracuse, Kansas, John and Carl of Manter Kansas;   four sisters Mrs Mary Ferguson Bend, Oregon,  Mrs Susie Pfister Pawnee Rock Kansas, Eula Johnson Spokane and Ora Browers Missouri; 29 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

TOMBSTONE TUESDAY ~ Thomas Minear Millsaps 1752 - 1837

Thomas Minear Millsaps  was born on the 23 Dec 1752 in Staunton, Augusta, Virginia, United States and  died on the 1st of April 1837 in Randolph, North Carolina, United States.
Thomas is my fourth great grand uncle. Thomas is the brother of my ancestor Robert Millsap/ Millsaps

This week I am going to be working on my Millsap / Millsaps family. This picture is of George Everett Millsap and family. George is the brother of my great grandmother Rachel Millsap Zion who married Jonathan Adam Zion.

Pictured with George is his wife Amanda SAMS and children Everett Ray, Anna E, Hazel, Jasie, Jessie, and William. Son Walter passed away before this picture was taken.

The Millsaps are all dressed up in their best for this family picture. The picture was taken about 1914.

I believe they were living in Missouri.

 More research needs to be done on this family to confirm that I have the correct names of some of the children. George last years were in Idaho. I did not know I had family that had gone to Idaho so this will be a new state to do some research in.

The parents of George and my great grandmother Rachel were Flavious Armenious and Anna Woodmansee Millsap. Flavious and Anna had a total of ten children.

Tombstone Tuesday posting is of my 4th x great grandfather Robert Millsap who passed away the 4 Apr 1842 in Hamblen, Brown, Indiana. He is the father of William Bella Millsap and was married to Marcia Lacy.

OBITURARY SUNDAY Remembering Anna Woodmansee Millsap Passed Away in 1904

This is the obituary of my great great grandmother on my father's mother's side.

July 28, 1904

MILLSAP. - Mrs. Ann MILLSAP died at her home at Syracuse, Kansas, July 2, 1904, aged 62 years, 11 months and 22 days.
She was the oldest daughter of James and Rachel WOODMANSEE, was born in Jackson county, Indiana, July 10, 1841. She came with her parents to Lee county, Iowa, remaining there one year. In the fall of 1849 they came to Decatur county and settled west of Decatur City, near the Woodmansee bridge, September 1.

She was married to Armeneous MILLSAP. To this union was born eleven children, the oldest dying in infancy. Five sons and five daughters are living; Mrs. Adam ZION, Wilton, Minn.; Mrs. Del FERGUSON, Hope, Idaho; George of Fellsburg,
Kan.; John of Wyonoka, Okla.; Mrs. Charles PFIESTER, Great Bend, Kan.; Frank, Arthur, Carl and Ora, all of Syracuse, Kan. She leaves a husband, twenty-two grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. They are: John WOODMANSEE, Leon, Rebuen of Indianola, George of near Decatur, Mrs. J. W. MCLAUGHLIN of Decatur, and Mrs. W. H. GRAYSON of Redding.

She united with the Christian Church when quite young, and has lived a consistent Christian until death. The husband has lost a faithful companion of nearly forty-seven years, the children a kind and loving mother. She has been a great sufferer for several years, but has bore her suffering with patience and christian fortitude.

Loving mother, thy work's all done,
Beautiful soul into glory gone.
Beautiful life with its crown now son,
God giveth rest.
Rest from all sorrows and watching and fears,
Rest from all possible sighings and tears;
Rest through God's endless, wonderful years,
At home with the blest.

Beautiful spirit, free from all strain.
Ours they heartache, the sorrow and pain;
Thine is the glory and infinite gain.
They slumber is sweet.
Peace on the brow, and the eye-lids so calm;
Peace in the heart, 'neath the white folded palm;

On Or About This Day ROBERT MILLSAP Died On April 4th 1842 in Brown Indiana

On April 04, 1842 my 4th great grandfather Robert Millsap passed away in Brown Indiania.

Robert was born the 28th of February, 1773 in Rowan, North Carolinia to Robert Millsaps (1719-1793) and Ellender King (1733 - 1796).

 Robert had ten siblings and was the youngest child. His brothers and sisters were Ellen, William, Thomas, James, Jane, Edward, Joseph , Moses and Mary.

Robert married Marcia Lacy in 1796 at Green Tennesee. They had seven children with my 3rd great grandfather Bella ( 1797- 1885) being the oldest. The other children were James (1798 - 1860), Gabriel(1801 - ?), Anna ( 1803 -?), John (1805- 1892), Marcy (1805-?), and Gamatiel (1824 - 1908).

In the 1780 census there is a Robert Millsaps. This is probably my 5th great grandfather. The only information that it tells me is they were in Rowan county of North Carolina in the Captain Cox district.

Robert can be found with his parents in the 1790 census of Randolph County, North Carolina. There are eight people living in the house. 4 males over 16, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Robert would of been 16 or 17 years old at this time.
Living two houses away is a Thomas Millsaps which may of been his brother. Living in this house was 5 family members.

I find a Robert Millsap in the 1820 census Jackson County, Indiana. Living in the home is a total of 7 family members. There is a male over 45 years old and a female over 45 years old. Also in the home are 1 male 10 to 15 years old, 3 males 16 to 25 years old and 1 female 16 to 25 years old. This could be my Robert Millsaps.
Note that in this census the s is missing at end of name. Later generations do drop this s.

In the 1840 census I find Robert and his wife Marcia living in Hamblin, Brown county, Indiana. Census reports both are 60 to 69 years old. No one else is living in their home.

I found on http://www.ancestry.com/ the tombstone of my Robert Millsaps. It was originally added by J. Bradshaw. The tombstone is in Taggart Cemetery in Brown County, Indiana. Written on is In memory of Robert Millsaps born Feb 28, 1773 died April 4, 1842.

I am curious about the 1780 census and finding out more about what it means to be in Captain Cox's district and who he was.
I have not found Robert in the 1810 or the 1830 census yet. There are two Robert Milsaps but ages do not match so need to look at family around them to see if one could just have wrong age.
In the 1820 census there is a Jehemiah Lacey living near by. Is this a relative of Marcia Lacy?

Just for today I am searching one of my ancestors. Today it was Robert Millsaps my 4th great grandfather. Rest in peace grandpa.. Grace

1850 residing in Flinn, Lawrence, Indiania with daughter Sophronia and sons Flavious and Irenesus

1856 living in West Fork, Iowa

1870 living in Decatur, Decatur, Iowa

1880 census has him living in Boon, Bates, Missouri with son Flavious and his family

1885 census has him in Bloomington, Decatur, Iowa with Flavious and his family

1885 15 August passes away in Decatur City, Decatur, Iowa

I am putting a copy of this in family note book with Bella's information and in my traveling research binder so I can remember all the states he lived in with family.

On Or About This Date Robert Millsaps Died in 1793

On or about this day Robert Millsaps passed away in December of 1793 in Randolph North Carolina.

Robert was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1719 to Thomas and Mary (Poplin) Millsaps. Robert married Ellender King. To this marriage 10 children were born, Moses Taylor, Mary, James Madison abut 1755, Jane 1757, Ellen about 1760, Thomas about 1762, Edward about 1766, Joseph about 1768, Robert about 1772 and William about 1774.

Brief History Of The Millsaps Family

Our Millsaps family history is greatly enhanced and enriched by a letter written many years ago by one Billy Millsaps who was born in Greene County, Tennessee in the winter of 1797. (The letter is on file in the History and Genealogy Department of the Rowan Public Library in Salisbury, North Carolina.) In the letter, Mr. Millsaps writes of his ancestor, and the following are tidbits from the letter in regard to our line of Millsaps.

" The oldest son of my Grandfather, Robert Millsaps, who at the age of sixteen came to America from Ireland with his father.. and family about the year 1735, who settled in Augusta Co, Va. in two miles of Stanton. My grandfather had three brothers, whose names were: Thomas, Joseph, and William. They all four finally left their father's settlement in Virginia in the hands of John McDowel, one of their brothers in law settled in North Carolina. My grandfather and mother, Robert and Ellen (her father's name was King) Millsaps had ten children. The oldest was named Ellen, she died when small; Thomas, Jane, James, Edward (he was drowned when about grown), Joseph, Moses, Mary, Robert, and William. Thomas, James, Moses, Robert and their two sisters and brothers in law Samuel Yates and Thomas Farmer, left Randolph County, N. C. and settled in Greene Co. Tenn, a little before I was born, January 10,1797. As to Aunt Jane's children, she had five, the first was called Jesse Millsaps. He lived in Sullivan Co. Tenn. He was drafted in the time of the War of 12 and went on his way to the seat of war under Jackson.

We have documented Thomas Millsaps as having been listed in the records of Augusta County, Virginia as early as 1747. Thomas was born circa 1679 in Belfast, Ireland, and he was the son of William and Elizabeth Millsaps. Thomas married Mary Poplin, and their son Robert was born circa 1719 in Belfast. Robert married circa 1747 to Ellender King, and their daughter Jane Millsaps was born circa 1754. Jane bore Jesse Millsaps out of wedlock, and she later married Samuel Yates, a Revolutionary War veteran who died in Cocke County, Tennessee in 1844.
Jesse Millsaps (aka Jesse " Yates") married on the 2nd of April 1799 in Carter County, Tennessee to Mary "Polly" Hyder, daughter of Michael Hyder(1740-1790) and Elizabeth Wood (1745-1841). Jesse and Mary's daughter, Elizabeth Millsaps (1798-after 1880) married in 1820 in Carter County, Tennessee to Jacob Kite (1798-after 1860). Elizabeth Kite and her husband Jacob Kite removed to Blount County, Tennessee before 1830, and were separated sometime before 1840 to 1850. Jacob was found in later years in Greene County, Tennessee and Elizabeth Millsap Kite remained with her children in the area of Blount County, Tennessee, where she must of died sometime after the 1880 census of that county was taken.

Family information on http://www.ancestry/ states he moved to Tennessee after leaving North Carolinia but that he died in North Carolinia. Did he go to visit and die or move back to North Carolina. This is a guestion that needs to be studied further.

Tombstone Tuesday Remember Flavious and Anne Millsap of Kansas

For Tombstone Tuesday this week I am featuring the Tombstone of Flavious and Anne (Woodmansee) Millsap. On the tombstone is written F. A. and Annie. I was able to find this through http://www.findagrave.com/ . They are buried at the Syracuse cemetery, in Syracuse, Kansas.

Flavious and Annie are one of my great great grandparents on my father's side of the family.

Flavious was born the 10th of November 1832 in Bedford, Indian to William Bella and Elizabeth (McGuyer) Millsap. William passed away the 10th of April 1910 in Syracuse, Kansas.

Anna Woodmansee was born the 10 of July 1841 in Jackson, Green County, Missouri to James White and Rachel (Burrell) Woodmansee. She passed away the 02nd of July 1904 in Syracuse, Hamilton county, Kansas.

Flavious and Anna were married the 01 September 1857. To this marriage were born 10 children.

This week in my Family History and the relatives I am especially thinking of this week

Nov 7th Anna Day was born in 1742 and passed away 3rd June 1815. She is my 4th great grand aunt and her parents are Isaac and Anna (Foote) Day

Nov 10th Flavious Millsap was born in 1832 in Indiana and passed away 10th of April 1910 in Kansas. He married Anna Woodmansee and is my 2nd great grandfather. I am related through his daughter Rachel Millsap who married Jonathan Adam Zion


Nov 12th Ephrain Lockwood was born in 1814 in New York. Ephrain was married to Jane ? and then to Katherine Philo. He died 31 May 1877 and is my 3rd great uncle

Nov 12th Reuben Asher Chapin was born in 1830 in New York. Reuben was married to Lourinda Cheuvront. He passed away 07 of September 1906. He is my 5th great grandfather and I am related through his daughter Kate. Kate married John Beiler.

Nov 12th Lemuel Cheuvront was born 1812 in Virginia and also passed away Nov 12th Lemuel Cheuvront died in 1896 in Colorado . Lemuel was married to Mary Rouse. He is my 3rd great grandfather and I am related through his daughter Alta
Nov 13 Ebenezer Coleman was born in 1831 in Ohio and died 25th of July 1894. He is my 2nd great uncle and his parents are Alexander ( Elic ) Coleman and Catherine Beiler Coleman

Anna Woodmansee Milsap my Great Great Grandmother

I love searching for family on the Internet. Only if my aunt Alice was alive today, she would be amazed.
Last night I put in the name Zion and came up with different links. Many of them mine from my postings. I would click on the different links to see what I would find, coming up with nothing new. one link was for http://genforum.genealogy.com/zion/ There I saw questions and answers for the Zions. Then I spotted a post about the obituary for Mrs. Ann Millsap. She was married to Flavious Armenious Millsap. Her children were listed, one being Mrs. Adam ZION one my great grandmothers on my father's side.
I now have her obituary. The following was printed in The Lamoni Chronicle (Iowa)July 28, 1904

I knew about her and had this picture of her thanks to http://www.ancestry.com/ but I know have this final piece of paper. Her obituary printed in the paper.

I know she was born in Indiana July 10, 1841, married Flavious September 01,1857 in Leon Decatur Iowa and had eleven children the first dying in infancy. Her last years were in Syracuse Kansas where she died. Flavious was a farmer, her task was taking care of this large family.

One last search was to see if I could find the grave of Flavious and Anne Millsap. Went to http://www.findagrave.com/ . First searched Kansas Anne Millsap nothing found. Next search was Flavious once again nothing found. Last searched just the last name of Millsap in Kansas and found a page of Millsaps buried in the Syracuse Cemetery in Syracuse, Kansas. Flavious and Anne's tombstone is identified by F. A. and Annie.

Now I have their gravestone and know that some one called her Annie. They are buried side by side in the Syracuse Cemetery, Syracuse, Kansas.

There is so much more I want to know about her and will continue to search for information about Anne, Flavious and their family.

Tombstone Tuesday My Great Grandparents Adam and Rachel Zion

Today for Tombstone Tuesday I am sharing the gravestone of one of my great grand parents

This is Johnathan Adam and Rachel Ann Millsap Zion at the time they married.

Johnathan was born September 29, 1861 and died April 07, 1927

Rachel was born 1863. I have her birth date as April 19, 1862 but gravestone says 1863 which is

probably correct. Need to check on that further. She died May 13, 1945.

They married in 1866 in Lamoni, Decatur, Iowa and had five Children. Perry ( my grandfather),

Norton, Bessie , Gertrude and Mary E

Who Were My Great Grandparents Part 6

This is number six of my great grandparents. Rachel Millsap who married my great grandparent Adam Zion ( great grandparent number five).

Rachel was the daughter of Flavious and Anna (Woodmansee) Millsap who was born April 19, 1862 in Mount Ayr Ringgold, Iowa. She was the oldest of 1o children.

By reading my great grandfather Adam's information all the marriage and children information can be found.

She out lived her husband 18 years living her last years in Washington state with her children.

The following story is from the Zion family cookbook from a family reunion. It was told by my dad's cousin Ray. ( He was named after her)

" Grandma Zion ( Rachel Millsap) she lived in the converted chicken house in Craig, Colorado. She would have a nice hot meal for me, and ply me with Saveway gingersnaps. We would play dominos or checkers or chinese checkers until bedtime. She had a little gas heater in the front room but the bedrooms were unheated. The house had four rooms , a kitchen, a front room and two bedrooms. Grandma always had a bottle of hot water or heated bricks wrapped in a towel to place at my feet in the bed, and lots of beautiful hand quilted comforters to keep me snug and warm through the night. She was a wonderful grandmother.

Her recipe for love .. to treat me as her equal and always do a few little extra things to make me feel wanted or welcome.

I remember the hand made soap she used to do her dishes and clothes. I remember her long white hair that she always wound up in a top knot. I remember her deep blue eyes. I remember I only heard her use one swear word. I did here her use it three or four times when she had cause to be disturbed. It was especially effective because of her rarity of use of such words around me. ( It was a four letter world meaning manure). I remember the winter she fell and fractured her skull, and her almost miraculous recovery.

For some reason she would not eat fish. Near the end of World War two she came to Washington to spend the rest of her days. On one occasion there were quite a few people at the kitchen table for dinner. Salmon patties had been prepared. Grandma Rachel had never eaten Salmon patties before and no one informed her of their content. She was on her third helping when someone asked her if she knew what she was eating. When they told her she said " OMPHH , pushed back the plate with the remaining fish and would eat no more.
She passed away on mother's day May 15, 1945 while visiting one of her sons of a heart attack.

She was brought back to Colorado to be buried next to her husband Adam.

Sounds like she was a warm loving woman. Of course I am to young to have know her but how I wish I could of met her.
