Sepia Saturday Hats Of To The Man In A Hat

Sepia Saturday this week is Hats Of To Men In A Hat

This week I am featuring my 2nd great grandfather on my father paternal side.

When John Henderson Zion was born November 28th, 1831 in Rush Indiana, his father McCormic was 36 and his mother Mary was 35.
John was only 3 years old when his mother passed away .  His father had been married once before John's mother and again after John's mother died so he had a number of siblings.

He married Mary M Cassell on September 8th 1853.  They would have four children in 14 years.
Mary , William, Jonathan Adam who is my great grand father and his younger sister Etta.

John was a farmer and lived most of his life in Iowa.  I know little about him but I see a strong man in those eyes.

At he end of his life he was living with daughter Mary and her husband in Missouri.  He would die there but then be buried in Iowa

He died on April 22, 1920 in Foster Missouri at the age of 88 years old and is buried in Lamoni, Iowa

SEPIA SATURDAY 1st December 2012

Time for Sepia Saturday and bridges,  water or even dogs are the theme. Swim suits or fishing could be ideas for this posting.
My mother told me that as a young child about 4 or 5 my great uncle Wayne would take me fishing. Sadly I have no pictures or memories of this, but I have wonderful memories of Uncle Wayne. Sweet and jolly man he always made me smile.
Uncle Wayne was the half brother to my grandma Grace and he and his wife Mary would visit often from Michigan. No date on the picture but from the early 1960s. It was taken in their home, I can tell from the picture of Jesus hanging on the wall. I love grandpa's tie, he always wore a tie for pictures, church or any time he left the house.
This is a picture of my uncle Wayne and Aunt Mary with my grandma Grace and grandpa Bill

While going through PILES of photos I did find this treasure of a photo. I need to get copies of it to give as a gift to my sister and brother, children and my nephew.
This photo is of my mom and dad sitting at the end of a pier and is dated 1949. It is taken some where in Texas. I was born in 1948 and my sister would join us in 1950. If you read my blog you will find the story of my mother contacting polio in 1952 and how we almost lost her at that time. With prayer and a gift from God she survived to live until 1998. Daddy left us in 2008 but had been slipping away from us with the disease of dementia for over 10 years before death came.
This picture takes my breath away, It is a gift to look at these two beautiful young people in picture. I no longer take pictures with film using my digital camera or phone. These pictures I take may never be found by my descendants 60 years from now. Just may be time to get some real film and grab my camera from the shelf in the closet.

I hope that you will take a moment and visit other postings at Sepia Saturday.
Thanks for stopping by for Sepia Saturday. Next stop is the thrift store to find some cheap photo albums to start putting these piles of photos in. Grace

SEPIA SATURDAY ~ WORK IS THE TOPIC ~ BOOKS ARE THE ANSWER

This week the topic is work for Sepia Saturday. We love to play but we all have to work at some time to pay the bills.

I have had many hats in my work world. I have worked at Pizza Hut. This was back in the 1970's. I managed to work my way from waitress to assistant manager. I enjoyed the work and the responsibility. Then new owners came in and they did not have female assistant managers. I could quit or go back to waitress only. I quit of course. I would love for them to have tried that today.
I worked in a Alcoholic treatment center for nine years as an aide. That was an interesting and rewarding time in my life.
I sold real estate for a few years. Fun work but hard work. Working on commission only can be tricky.
But the end of all end work was when hubby and I owned our own bookstore for over 15 years. That was the best. At one time we had two bookstores. The second store was beautiful but not a money maker so that was the end of that store.
Soon after we retired and went on to other adventures of traveling the United States.  We still dabble in the book business selling on the Internet.
As a child I loved the library and spent hours there. Wanted to even work in a library. That never happened but I did own a bookstore.  Life was great in our own book store. Life is still great as I wander used bookstores and smell and feel the old books.

Hope that you enjoyed reading about a small piece of my life today. You can read others sharing about work here at Sepia Saturday.  Grace

Sepia Saturday 118 : Going Out Meet The Millsap Family

Tonight's Sepia Saturday is labeled Going Out. Ourselves or family members all dressed up to go out. You can read other Sepia Saturdays here.

This week I am going to be working on my Millsap / Millsaps family. This picture is of George Everett Millsap and family. George is the brother of my great grandmother Rachel Millsap Zion who married Jonathan Adam Zion.
Pictured with George is his wife Amanda SAMS and children Everett Ray, Anna E, Hazel, Jasie, Jessie, and William. Son Walter passed away before this picture was taken.
The Millsaps are all dressed up in their best for this family picture. The picture was taken about 1914.
I believe they were living in Missouri.
More research needs to be done on this family to confirm that I have the correct names of some of the children. George last years were in Idaho. I did not know I had family that had gone to Idaho so this will be a new state to do some research in.
The parents of George and my great grandmother Rachel were Flavious Armenious and Anna Woodmansee Millsap. Flavious and Anna had a total of ten children.

Thanks for stopping by for Sepia Saturday Grace

SEPIA SATURDAY SCOUTING

This week’s Sepia Saturday prompt is a tribute to the 100th birthday of scouting in the United States.

Scouting was a fun time for a young girl in the 1960's.  I was in the brownies and then the girl scouts.  Every week we would have a meeting at the leaders home and work on badges.

Here is a picture of me in my girl scout uniform.  To bad that it is faded.

Thanks for stopping by for Sepia Saturday Grace

Sepia Saturday 115 : Games or How About Just Playing In A Puddle

Sepia Saturday 115 : Games

This week for Sepia Saturday the topic is games. I could not find any pictures with people playing games with in my family photos. While searching through piles of old photos I found a bag full of photos of my Aunt Daisy. Aunt Daisy was my mother’s sister and was a big part of my life. My mother got polio back in 1952 and when we moved from Texas back to Minnesota, aunt Daisy would take us girls to places my mother could not. She would take us to the fair every year and we would take the train from Duluth to Minneapolis once every summer. She never married and always called us girls, my sister, two cousins and myself her kids. In the later 1960’s my parents bought a large house and moved my grandmother and my aunt Daisy to live with them. After grandma died, aunt Daisy continued to live in the lower level of the house until they sold the house and moved to a senior high rise. For the first time ever Aunt Daisy had her own apartment. Age was creeping in and she had a tendency to save to many meals in the refrigerator. My cousin Bonnie would go and clean it out every week to help keep things tidy.

So for Sepia Saturday I am sharing a darling picture of my Aunt Daisy playing in a puddle of water. With her is a young version of my great aunt Grace Day Crosby. Funny seeing pictures of aunt Grace young because she was always old to me. I remember her old, serious and a bit crabby. Here she is young, pretty and smiling and enjoying her brother Bill’s first child. I like this picture of her and aunt Daisy. Every one is young and happy in old photos.

I think I will post some more pictures of a young aunt Daisy soon. Until then thanks for stopping by, how about taking a moment to pull out some old photos you have. Lets find young and happy people of long ago to make us smile. Grace

Sepia Saturday: Men and More Mystery Photo Searching To Identify

Sepia Saturday: Men and More this was a post a couple of weeks ago. I had to work that weekend and did not get out my picture. Tonight I want to show a picture of a man in our family.  It is an unknown man in my family.

This picture was found in my mother's family pictures but is unidentified.  He is a handsome man dressed in what I think is clothing of working at a train station. He has a great hat and on his pants is a badge hanging.
He has a great pose and resembles my great great uncle George but is not uncle George.  But who is this mystery man.  He resembles the Day family line so  I will search among the Day's to see if I can find some male that work at the Great Northern railroad some time in the mid 1990's.

I am also including a picture of George Day. Do you see a resemblance?

Thanks for stopping by Grace

Sepia Saturday: Made for Walking It Is All About The Shoes Vintage Family Photos

Sepia Saturday: Made for Walking is all about the shoes is this Saturday's challenge.

Here are a couple old pictures of cuties in shoes. The first one is of me and my cousin Bonnie taken in 1951 Boyton Texas. I would of been about 3 and Bonnie 2 years old. We seem to be wearing matching dresses and shoes.

The next picture is just to adorable.  This one was found in my mother's family's pile of photos. It is of Juanita Halvorson a cousin of my mother's. She is so sweet looking with the curly hair and smiling face. Look at how the socks bunch up at her ankles. I will have to share this at ancestry on my family tree so other family members can have it.

Juanita was the step daughter of my great grandmother Katherine. Juanita's mother was Tillie and I do remember her with fond thoughts and always thought of her as my grandmother's sister and knew nothing of this step relationship.
I hope that you enjoy some of my family photos of shoes. I will be sharing these over at Sepia Saturday.  Grace

SEPIA SATURDAY BOOKS ARE THE WAY TO GO IS THE THEME

This week's photos involve people holding or reading books. I love books and have since a child. My sister and I would walk weekly to the library every Saturday.
A beautiful old building that wa a palace to me. The books I wanted were on the top floor and you got there by taking a set of stairs. The floor was glass so you could see the people below you.  I still love to think of that wonderful place of my childhood.

When I got home I would lay in the grass of a private club called the Kitchi Gammi Club. It was a block away from our home. No one ever chased this little girl away who could lay for hours on their property.
Other times I would walk a block away and sit on the steps of this apartment building. There was statues of lions at the end. Today the building is in terrible repair and I feel so sad when I see the building of my childhood memories.

And best of all when I grew up this little girl owned her own used bookstore with her dear hubby. We even had two bookstores at one time. Dreams can come true. Retirement came and we closed down both stores but I still love to go into used bookstores, to go to estate sales and head directly to the book shelves.

I love the feel of books and the smell of books and I still love to go to our local library.

This building is new and modern, but if you go to the second floor and wander into this one area you will once again be surrounded with beautiful bookshelves, books and funiture.  Of course this is the genealogy area and dreams happen there too while searching for family history.

So while I have no sepia pictures at this moment, I do have great memories of books. Will have to take a search through my family pictures for something in the color of sepia.

I will be sharing this over at Sepia Saturday, stop in for a moment and see what others are sharing.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing a little girl's memories of books. Grace

SEPIA SATURDAY CHILD WITH STUFFED BUNNY RABBIT VINTAGE CABINET PHOTO

For this weeks Sepia Saturday I am sharing a vintage cabinet photo of a young child with a stuffed bunny.

Pictured is a darling young child with a sweet little smile and his hand on his bunny.
Written in tiny lettering is a name, I can not make out the first name at this time but last name looks like Wagner.
This was found in family photos and I am not sure which side but would tend to lean towards my mother's side on her father's side.  Further time searching family names to find out who this may be.

Hope that you enjoy this adorable family photo.

I am sharing this at Sepia Saturday, you can find more interesting postings there. Grace

Sepia Saturday 109 21st January 2012 Dolls Are The Theme Creepy Is My Pick

This weeks theme for Sepia Saturday is dolls. Last night I was busy working on updating my family research and spaced out taking a look at this weeks theme.

My first thought was that I would not find any old family photos with dolls. My baby photos had stuffed animals. On second look at this photo I see what is a doll on the left hand side.

The pretty baby is me of course and I am in my little tub. Mama writes there was no water in it so I am safe I guess. The note says I am chewing on my yellow duck. This picture would of been taken in 1949 and we were living in Texas, probably Baytown Texas.

I think the doll actually looks a little creepy, I sure did not have much hair at this time.

I love these old family photos. Thanks for stopping by for Sepia Saturday. I am sharing this over at Sepia Saturday. Take a look at others offerings on this weeks theme. Grace

Sepia Saturday Theme - Hats 14 January 2012 All Dressed In Their Hats

The theme for today's Sepia Saturday is HATS. Perfect time to dig out some old family photos of hats.
The above picture is of my grandma Grace Daly Esler Day and grandpa Bill Day. They are pictured in their Sunday go to meeting hats. I think they look adorable. This is dated 1945 or 1946.

Next is a picture of my mother and great aunt Mary wife of my uncle Wayne Esler. It is marked 1948 and was taken in San Antonio Texas. Since that is the year I was born I am guessing my mom is pregnate with me just a few months. I loved my great aunt Mary, she had a warm smile and laugh and wore bright red nail polish. No one else in my family wore nail polish so as a child I always thought she was so daring. I love her hat tilted to the side. Boy she was so cute and adorable.

I love to see pictures of my mom before she got polio. It is fun to see her in pretty shoes. Once she had polio she no longer could wear pretty shoes like these pictured. She wore sturdy shoes and a brace on one leg.

And last picture is a wonderful vintage cabinet photo of some relatives of mine. Not sure who they are as of yet but are related on my great grandma Katherine Gallaghers side of the family. Her mother my great great grandma Joanna's maiden name was Riordan. This picture was in a vintage family album. On the paper of album is written May and Frank Riordan.
This family is full of brick walls. Maybe I can start breaking down some walls with this family album full of old cabinet photos.
I am sharing this over at Sepia Saturday. Hope that you have enjoyed seeing a couple of my vintage photos. Grace

Mystery Family Members Sepia Saturday

This is a great old photo that came out of a scrap book of my mother's so is from the Day side of the family. The family lived in Minnesota around the Mora area. My mom was born in 1923 and I am thinking she may have taken this picture. That is how I am dating it to the 1930's to 1940's.
Problem is there is no names, not sure if family or friends but I will guess family.
The clothing is intersting especially the second child a young girl with what may be a hat. The older gentleman is wearing a thin tie that is stuck into his shirt.
Any one out there have a better idea to the age of photo?
Thanks to all of you that stop by and view my pictures. I hope that you mark me a favorite and visit often... Grace

I am nowhere  done searching for my roots. For my missing family members.  So many to fine so little time.  This has been a hard few years ...
