ON OR ABOUT THIS DAY MY ANCESTORS WERE BORN OR DIED

On or about the last days something happened in my family. Either there was the happiness of a birth like
Michael Cassell was born in 1763 on the 14th of January.
Anna Smith was born in 1807 on the 16th of this month or the sadness of a death in the family.
Sally Grimes passed away on the 17th of this month in 1873.

Michael Cassell was born in Augusta, Washington, Virginia to Abraham and Martha Flinner Cassell.
He married Mary Fleenor and had eleven children. He died on the 9th of August in 1847. Michael is my 4th great grandfather on my father's side of the family.

Anna Smith was born in Rome, New York parents unknown at this time. She married Alfred Day and is my 3rd great grandmother on my mother's side. She had 4 children with Alfred. She passed away some time in the 1830's date unknown at this time.

Sally Grimes is my 3rd great grandmother on my father's side. She was born on the 18th of November in 1800 in New Hampshire to Nathan Grimes and Hepsibeth Lovejoy. She married John Hall Jr and had 7 children. On the 17th of January in 1873 she passed away.

Surname Saturday Grimes Family

Tonight I am reviewing the Grimes Family for Surname Saturday.

 41. Sally Grimes was married to 40. John Hall Jr on 10th of May 1825. Sally was born 18 November 1801 and passed away the 17th of January 1873 in Evansville Illinois.

Sally and John had seven children, Hepizibah, Caroline, George, John , Harriet, Mary and Sally. Their son George is my ancestor and you can see the Hall name here.

Sally was the daughter of 82.Nathan Grimes and 83. Hepisbeth or Hepzibah Lovejoy.
Nathan was born 16 December 1772 in Massachuettes and died 01 March 1856 in New Hampshire. Hepisbeth was born 24 of November 1774.
Sally and Nathan had three children that I know of, Edward, Sally and Nathan.

Nathan is the son of  164 William Grimes and mother is unknown at this time.

Not much is known about the Grimes family at this time.

Finding 3rd Great Grandmother Sally Grimes In The Census

Last night I wrote about one of my 3rd great grandmother's Sally Grimes. I had found her in the 1840's and 1850's census but not earlier census.
Tonight I decided to work on her father Nathan Grimes at www.ancestry.com and by finding him in the census the hints came up finding her.

In 1840 she is living in Oxford, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Living with her is her five daughters. Three under age 5 and 2 between the ages of 10 to 14. Here two sons George and John Alonzo are not listed with the family. Who are they living with.
I wish this census would tell us her occupation. How did she support herself and her family.

Her father and family are living in the same town at this time. They are on page 9 of 18 while she is on page 7 of 18.

The 1850 census has her living in Royalston, Worchester, Massachusetts with daughter Sally Rebecca who is called Rebecca in this census. Will have to search further who is living near her.

Always another question to think about and another fact to try and figure out. One great hunt after another. That is what makes it alls so intriquing.

Matrilineal Monday -- On This Day Sally Grimes Passes Away in 1873

Matrilineal Monday .. On this day Sally Grimes passed away January 17, 1873 in Evansville, Rock, Wisconsin.

Sally is one of my 3rd grandmother. Sally was born the 18th of November 1800 to Nathan Grimes and Hepsibeth Lovejoy in New Hampshire.

She married John Hall Jr. 10 May 1825. Together they had seven children. Hephizibah 1826, Caroline 1830, George 1832, John Alonzo 1834, Harriet 1835, Mary Eliza 1837, and Sally Rebecca 1838.

Sally her last child was born 18 October 1838 and John her husband died on the 22 of October 1838. Baby Sally was only 4 days old and her mother Sally was left not only with a brand new baby but with 6 other children to raise and take care. At this point they are living in New Hampshire.

I have not found her in the 1840 or 1850 census as of yet. By 1860 Sally is living in Madison Ward, Wisconsin with her daughters Mary 23 who is a teacher, Sally 21 and with them still is Judora Fairbanks. I do not know who this is as of yet. My guess is probably a grand daughter.

The 1870 census has her living still in Wisconsin and she is with her son George, his wife Louisa Marie Reynolds and their six children. George and Marie are my 2nd great grandparents. Judora is still with the family.

Sally passed away on this date in 1873. I find it interesting to think about her and wonder what her life was like taking care of those children. She never married again.

She is buried next to her son George and daughter in law Louisa at the Maple Hill Cemetery at Evansville, Wisconsin.

I will be back to research her another night and to image what her life was like living in the 1800's.

Tombstone Tuesday Sally Grimes Hall of Wisconsin

This Tombstone Tuesday I am featuring Sally Grimes Hall my great great great grandmother. Sally was the daughter of Nathan and Hephizibah ( Lovejoy) Grimes. She was born 18 November1800. She was born in New Hampshire.

She married John Hall Jr 10 May 1825 and passed away 17 January 1873 age 72 years old at Evansville, Wisconsin. She is buried in the Mapel Hill Cemetery. She shares a gravestone with son= George W and daughter in law Louisa.

John and Sally had seven children. They were the following.

Hephizibah Marie 10 May 1826 who married Stephen Fairbanks, Hephizibah passed away 18 July 1858 age 32 years

Caroline Augusta born 9 May 1830 who married a Mr. Jones, Caroline passed away 10 August 1865 age 35 years

George Wilbur Hall born 13 June 1832 and married Louisa Maria Reynolds 29 November 1860 ( this is my ancestor) George passed away 27 July 1892 age 60 years

John Alonzo born 17 February 1834 and died 28 Nov 1871 age 37 years

Harriet Sophia born 20 October 1835 who died 21 September 1849 age 23 years

Mary Eliza 30 March 1837 and died 7 March 1910 age almost 73 years old

Sally Rebecca born 18 October 1838, 4 days before her father passed away. She married a Mr. Foye and passed away 16 Nov 1878.

Sally out lived her husband and four of her seven children. The 1860 census has Sally living in Madison Ward 2, Dane, Wisconsin. Living with her is daughters Mary E Hall age 23 , Sally R Hall age 21 and Judora M Fairbanks. I would guess that Judora is the grandson of Sally. Her daugher Hephizibah Fairbanks died in 1858. Judora was 9 years old at this time.

The 1870 census has her living with George W and his family. Listed is I M Fairbank age 19, this is probably Judora listed in the 1860 census.
