   William Gallaher, age 39, was drowned in Running Slough yesterday afternoon at about 2:30 oclock, his body being found in the water about 15 feet from the shore after he had been missed for some time and a search was started.  Death is believed to be accidental.
   Mr. Gallaher went to the farm of his brother in law, Jacob Mickschl located in the bottom lands about a mile and a half west of Henry Murth's place on the Mormon Coulee road, yesterday afternoon to assist haying and it is thought he went wading to cool off when he either steeped into a hole or was overcome from the shock of the cold water.
   During the afternoon Mr Gallaher was working with Fred Kaser who went in search of a scythe to cut some hay which could not be reached with the mower. When Mr Kaser returned, Mr Gallaher was not there so the former asked Mr Michachl if he had seen him.  He had not, but was thought as Mr Gallaher had not been feeling well that he had gone to the house where he had been living.
   When he could not be located a search was started and after a while the body was seen in the water about 15 feet from the shore. Fessler and Dahl were notified and the body taken to their establishment and Corner Kleebar decided that it was not necessary to hold an inquest.
   Mr Gallaher was born on December 151871 in Chipmunk Coulee, Vernon County, and had lived there all his life.
   The funeral will be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon and interment will take place in the Catholic Cemetery beside his parents.
   Surviving Mr Gallaher are three sisters, Mrs Jacob Mickschl at whose home he lived , Miss Mary Gallaher of La Crosse and Mrs. Appleton Esler of  Mora, Minn.

Side not to this article I recently visited the cemetery and think that he is not buried next to his parents.
Cemetery records have his parents in the Old section and he is in a different area.

Who Were Their Neighbors Series Gallagher Gallaher Family Episode 1

Smoky Mountain Family Historian posted yesterday that she is starting a new series of looking

at her ancestors neighbors in the census.

Many genealogy speakers suggest to look at neighbors in a census 10 before and 10 after.

Others suggest to go 20 each side.

I will work on this same project but where to start.  I have three sets of ancestors that I know so little

about.  My maternal grandmother's mother and father.

All I know about grandmother's  father is his name.  I have searched his name in the census and may

 have an idea of who he is but not is parents or siblings at this time.  Once I find out who he may be a

DNA would be the next step if I found a descendant of his.

My grandmother's mother's family came from Ireland and do not know their siblings.

What I do have is family photo albums with some names.  Maybe I can link these names to my great

great grandmother Johanna Riordan and great great grandfather Patrick Gallagher.

I am starting with the Gallagher and the Riordan Family.  I plan to start 1870 census.

I checked the census 20 families either side and no one from Ireland. Majority were from Prussia.

No one with the name Gallagher, Riordan or Daly which are my names to search.

Next I went to family album and found photos Daniel Riordan and family,  Ann Riordan

and ? Perry Riordan.. Not sure what the first name is at this time.

I will spend more time searching these names in future census plus seeing if I can find any other

names in photo albums.

ON THIS DAY GREAT GREAT GRANDPA GALLAGHER / GALLAHER PASSED AWAY IN 1898

In 1898 on this day my great great grandfather Patrick Gallagher passed away in LaCrosse Wisconsin. Patrick was born in Ireland about 1838 and arrived in the United States some time in 1850. He was married to Joanne Riordan and had four children Mary, Bridget, Kathreen and William. He and Joanne settled in Wisconsin where they raised their family by being a farmer. I know very little about him and Joanna but do know they were Catholic.
Would be interesting to find a book to read about what it was like to live at this time and being an immigrant from Ireland.
I hope to make a trip this spring or summer to LaCrosse Wisconsin and see if I can get a death certificate for both Joanna and Patrick, find their gravestones and any other information I may find on them.

Is Each Record the Same Person? Is That My Gallagher / Gallaher

In Each Record I find I wonder Is that the same person? Is That My Gallagher / Gallaher?
I am working on attempting to get information on my Gallagher family line. I know who my great great grandfather is. His name is Patrick Gallagher and he immigrated from Ireland. My struggle is searching for him from the time he was living in La Crosse Wisconsin area backwards to when he came to this country.
I find a Patrick in the 1850 census living in New York age 11 listed with family. Father is Daniel, mother is Margaret and living in the home is 5 other siblings Mary, Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and John. Birth date is about 1839 born in Ireland.
Jump forward to the 1870 census where I know this my Patrick. He is living in Hamburg, Vernon County Wisconsin. Age is 32 and birth year is about 1838. Living with him is his wife JoAnna 30, daughters Mary age 4 and Bridgett age 2 and son William 7 months old. My great grandmother Katherine is not born yet.
The age works on these two censuses for Patrick so could be my ancestor.
Now we go to the 1860 census. I do find a Patrick and JoAnna Gallagher living in New York but the age is wrong. We have Patrick at age 30 and JoAnna at 26. This could be the wrong family or the census taker could of written the ages wrong. No way to know for sure at this time.
In the 1860 censurs living next door to Patrick is an Owen Gallagher. First name is not the same as my siblings in the 1850 census. Could be a brother who was not living in the home or could be a cousin or no relative again.

Just something to keep on the back burner as I continue to search for my Gallagher. Another name to watch for is Riordan as I search. That is JoAnna's maiden name.
On my want list is death certificates for both Patrick and JoAnna and any news articles I may find from that time period in Wisconsin where they were living. Also interesting to note is that Patrick named a daughter as Mary and Bridget and in the 1850 census Patrick had sisters Mary and Bridget.

Who Were My Great Grand Parents Part 4 Katherine Gallaher

Today is about my great grandmother Katherine Gallaher. Katherine was born May 10, 1873 to Patrick and Johanna ( Riordan ) Gallaher. She was born in Hamburg, Vernon Wisconsin. In 1893 she was married to Appleton Esler December 12, 1893 at the Methodist parsonage in La Crosse Wisconsin. She spent most of her life in the Mora, Minnesota area. She had a total of three children by birth, Grace, Merle and Jesse Wayne. Appleton had two children with his previous wife. They were Tillie and Russell. Katherine helped to raise them. I know very little of her life which is a real shame. She had my grandmother Grace in 1892 out of wedlock. At that time this was a great shame and I am told her parents turned her picture to the wall. She was raised Catholic and left that faith and became Methodist which also I would think strained the relationship with her parents.

Katherine died March 19, 1940 in Ogilive, Minnesota and is buried at the cemetery in Mora, Minnesota next to Appleton. Appleton died in 1938.
