Amanuensis Monday 07 Notes On John W Zion b abt 1770 d Bef 1850

Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog) started his own Monday blog theme many months ago called Amanuensis Monday.What does "amanuensis" mean?John offers this definition:"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."

For today's Amanuensis Monday I am sharing information on the earliest Zion I have in my Zion family tree. Zion is my maiden name.
John W Zion is the first name found in this family. As of yet no other records have been confirmed to who his father is. It is believed his father's name is Zion.
John is the head of the family and appears in Washington County, Virginia in 1789 where he married, November 3, 1789 by John Frost, to Lucy McCormick, born 1722 in Bedford County, Virginia, daughter of William and Agness ( Agnes) McCormick of Bedford County, formerly of Hanover County.
Lucy McCormick's father died in 1775, and after his death, Lucy became the ward of William and Lucy adams, by order of the Court. It is believed that William and Lucy were Lucy's grandparents. This has not been confirmed with recorded facts of yet.

Create A Personal Timeline For My Ancestors

I have started to work on getting a time line for my ancestors. I am hoping by doing time lines of what was happening in their personal life and historically I will get to know them better. I also will be able to see what information I am missing.
I have decided to go back as far as I can on each of my lines of grandparents and do the time line on each of them. I will then work forward on each generation.
Important information will be date in chronological order
age as close as possible to the event
What the event was and location to where it happened
and any documentation I have.
I started with a great x 4 grandfather John W Zion. I have not visited him in a long time so have lots to add since I just joined http://www.ancestry.com/
I have started this first time line in my word program I can then easily change and then print out.

My " Zion " family roots

My interest in genealogy started over 10 years ago. My father's sister started that interest as she would share graphs and names of my dad's family the " Zion " family. She would share family names the Colemans, Cheuvront's and the Hall family. As I searched I found more and more names. The more you look the wider the family gets. My Zion line came from Germany some time before 1770. As of now we do not know his or his wife's name. He was probably born about 1749. My first known Zion ancestor is John W Zion who was born about 1770 in North Fork Holston River Washington County Virginia. He had a sister named Rebecca Zion. John married Lucy McCornick November 3rd 1789 in Washington County Virginia.

Part of my interest in my family history is the history of the area and what happened in the lives of my ancestors. By going to http://www.google.com/ and putting in Washington County Virginia history I found the following information at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vawashin/

The first white settlers arrived in what is present day Washington County in the 1760's. Abingdon, Va. was known as Wolf Hills before "Abingdon" was selected as the name of the county seat. Washington County was formed from Fincastle County in 1777, the county seat, Abingdon was formed in 1778. The original Washington County, VA in addition to containing some of the other present day surrounding counties also contained what is today, Sullivan County, TN. Visit this page, Early Settlers of Washington Co, VA, to see some of the names of the early settlers to county (before 1780). Burned by Union forces in 1864. The county is divided into seven magisterial districts: Harrison, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Taylor, Tyler, and Wilson.

I searched the Early settlers link and only a few names were listed. I saw a McCormick but not a Zion so the search continues. I wonder if the McCormick is related to Lucy McCormick.
