On This Day Mary Lovejoy was born December 20 1779

Today we celebrate the birthday of my 5th great Aunt Mary Lovejoy who was born December 20th 1779  in Rindge , Cheshire, New Jersey. 

Mary was born to John Lovejoy ( 1749 - 1835)  and Mary Galup or Gallup Smith (1752-1834)

What a time in our history to be born.

Mary's tombstone states Mrs Mary Lovejoy. We know of know marriage at this time and if she did marry it would have to be a Lovejoy.

I have done little research on this family as of now.

I John Lovejoy of Andover in ye county of Essex in New England do declare this writing to be a further addition to my Will which heareth date ye 1st of September one thousand six hundred & Ninty with my hand and seale thereto (viz=) my will is that all my household Goods should be devided Equally between my son Ebenezer and my Daughter Deborah after my wifes decease.  And further my will is that my son Ebenezer pay or cause to be payed to my two daughters Abigaile and Deborah within one year after their marriage three pounds apiece in Neat cattle or sheep at ye price which those men shall judge them at which whith ye oversight of my son Ebenezer … Further I declare my will conerning my Grand child Frances Lovejoy that is now under my care and charge my will is that she  remaine with her Grandmother my loving wife, and her uncle my son Ebenezer until she be of eighteen years of age, and at the end of that terme of time, my will is that my son Ebenezer give her convenient clothing provided shee live with him until that age –Further I declare my will & desire that my Brother Thomas Osgood and my son William Lovejoy and my son Joseph Lovejoy be the men that shall have the oversight of my son Ebenezer until he come to age, also the oversight of my granddaughter above until her marrage desiring them to exercise parent all care and authority towards them in all things as if they were their own children, and also see that they doe carry themselves well and dutifull towards ye mother my dear wife, that they greive her not in her old as ye expect the Blessing of God upon you and yours - also I declare my will further concerning my son Ebenezer that he make no bargains at any time against the minds of these men above named which I appoint his overseers during the time of his non age : and I doe appoint my son Ebenezer and my loving wife executor and Executrix to this my last will , they acting in all difficult cases with the advice of those men, I have appointed overseers , hoping that they will see my dead body be decently buryed, they defraying my funerall expenses, I take my leave of them , the world , and all things else, within this vale of tears committing my soul into the hands of Jesus Christ my dear redeemer : with whom I hope to remaine world without end , amen, and for ye confirmation of this addition of my last will & testament I put to my hand and seale this twenty third day of October one thousand six hundred ninety.

Last part of page 3 is Further my will is that my son Ebenezer pay to his sister Deborah Lovejoy or her heirs five pounds in good and merchantable corne or cattle within nine 
Page 4 continues years after my decease & as concerning 20 acres of Land in my great division of land which I value in price at twenty pounds in pay which Land above said I will to my three sons viz= Christopher Joseph and Nathaniel to dispose of among themselves as they please, Provided that they pay to their 4 sisters vis= Sarah Johnson Ann Blanchard Abigail Lovejoy Deborah Lovejoy I say they paying to their four sisters above said five pounds a piece in Currant merchantable Corne or cattle at ye price Currant within Twelve months & one day after my decease. concerning thus is : That if she please rather to accept of that which those specified, Then all this to be null and void and nothing worth as concerning her,  But she refusing of that & accepted of this: my will is that it be faithfully performed to her in Every Degree and Tittle.

Item   Concerning my son Wm Lovejoy my Eldest son now living , I have given him his portion all ready as may appear by Deeds confirmed to him of ye Land which he now lives upon

The devotion of John Lovejoy had for his second wife Hannah Pritchard, is demonstrated by the careful provision he made for her in his six page will which is reproduced in this book.
John Lovejoy died Nov 7,1690 and his will was presented for probate Mar 31 1691.

In the name of God amen, I John Lovejoy of Andover in ye county of Essex in New England, being through God's mercy in health and enjoying my understanding & memory yet with all, considering my frailty, being also in age so in yt, respect cannot expect long to continue here, observing also what sudden changes so frequently fall out, knowing it to duly Incumbent for to sett things in order before I goe out of ye Land of the Living do ordain this my last Will & Testament , Committing my soul into ye hands of Jesus Christ my blessed savior & redeemer: my body to a decent bury all in what place ye Lord shall please to call me out of this present life.  In hopes of a joyful resurrection, at ye  resurrection of ye just into Eternal life, & for my outward Estate which it hath pleased ye Lord to lend me I thus dispose as followeth _- first, as to my dearly beloved wife Hannah Lovejoy with whom by Gods good providence we have lived comfortably together in a married condition about 13 years, my desire is that her life may be made comfortable while she continues in this world & for yt end doe give and bequeath unto her my beloved wife Hannah Lovejoy all of east end of my dwelling house  with half ye cellar & she is to have her liberty to chuse which half of ye cellar shall be hers and she to have liberty to Enjoy ye same until her decease or marriage also, I will & bequeath to my loving wife twelve bushels of good and merchantable corn also six pounds of good and merchantable pork, two barrels of cyder , one bushell and halfe of good malt, twelve bushels of good apples, my will is that all this be provided for her and delivered to her yearly during her naturall life, by 12 bushels of corn I mean six of Indian 3 of wheat & three of Rye, also I will & bequeath to my loving wife one good new milch cow for her use during her naturall Life & delivered to her yearly upon ye first day of May and she to Enjoy ye benefitt of it for milk ye Ensuing year.  Also , I will & bequeath to my loving wife five pounds yearly during her life in such things as she shall stand in need of Either at ye Merchants or at home, for clothing - also , a horse and Man to Wait upon her, to carry her to meeting if she desire it.  Also, my Will is that a convenient fire be maintained for her & suitable help in sickness or weakness provided for her & maintained by my son Ebenezer all of ye time of her dwelling in my house.  Also I further declare my mind as concerning a writing which was made between myself & wife about ye time of our marriage respecting her convenience of living after my decease, my will con-

Getting To Know My Lovejoy Ancestral Roots Post 1 John Lovejoy

Over the next few weeks I am going to be adding the Lovejoy 's to my family tree.  From John coming to America in about 1630 to the present I will travel through the generations.

The following information is from The Lovejoy Genealogy with Biographies and History 1460 - 1930
compiled, written, Edited and Published by Clarence Earle Lovejoy copyrighted 1930.
I bought a copy of this book over 10 years ago and it is full family trees.
I am sure there is new information found since 1930 and I look forward to finding it.

JOHN LOVEJOY of Andover, son of Rowland of England was the common ancestor of most of the Lovejoy families in America and was born in England about 1622.  He died in Andover, Massachusetts Nov 7th 1690.

The date of  when John Lovejoy immigrated to America has not been determined satisfactorily.  Some believe he arrived on April 11th 1630 in the ship " Arabella".  On that same ship some believe
that his future father in law traveled.  Other's believe that John's future father in law Christopher Osgood and his family came on the boat Mary and John arriving in 1633/4.

Similar differences of opinion exist about the exact date when John Lovejoy settled in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.

According to Abbot's History of Andover, the list of the first settlers is recorded on  a leaf in the town records and written in ancient hand. It is with out date, but probably was written when most of the settlers were still living, so is considered that it may be correct.

John did not marry until another seven years.  How he lived and who he lived with I have no idea.

According to Miss S L Bailey's Historical Sketches of Andover, the third in the list of the first ten marriages in Andover was on Jan 1, 1651, John Lovejoy and Mary Osgood b 17 Mar 1633 or 32 Marlboro, Wilts, England d in Andover July 15, 1675.
They were married at Ipswich, Massachusetts by Rev Mr. Simons.

John waited more than a year after the death of Mary Osgood , before he took as his second wife, Hannah Pritchard widow of  William Pritchard on February 12, 1676.  The marriage was in Andover, Massachusetts .
Hannah out lived John and died August 1 1705 in Andover of a cancer in her throat.

Interesting note is that Hannah and William Pritchard had a daughter Sarah born January 22, 1662. Sarah married her step brother Joseph Lovejoy my 8th great grandfather.
